Chris Harper mentioned that game in Jeff Kent’s book Port Vale Tales. He was at the ground dictating copy back to the office via phone but got stick for the headline that was written by one of the sub editors. The front page had to be put to bed before the final whistle and the trick was to not commit yourself too much with the headline.

The Evening Sentinel that day had the headline "heavy defeat for Vale". Then on the back in the stop press it gave the final score. No 'Green 'un' in them days, no instant anything. BTW, them days there were always lads out side lobbing bricks in the the away fans

Surely there was  a Green 'Un. I used to walk a 1/2 mile to my nearest newsagent every Saturday night to pick one up.

82-83 promotion season?

As a kid I remember following the game on Radio Stoke - it was in the days of no full-match commentary, just occasional reports and the goal horn\klaxon to alert a change in the score.

Was unbelievable when it kept going off as Vale came from 0-3 down with 20-odd minutes left to draw.

Good old Jimmy Greenhoff! It must have been fantastic to have been there at Spotland for it (....the last 25 minutes anyway! 😆 )

Maybe I'm miss remembering then. I do remember the headline. of course, it had to be printed at some point with additions put on the back in the stop press. Maybe someone knows exactly when The Green 'un came into being?? I've got a number saved from the 'Glory Days'.
