Sad to hear there’s been a fire there this afternoon. I was told it had been broken into and used as a cannabis factory since it has been empty.

On Tuesday night the pavement outside was bollarded / coned off so I assume that was when the Police raided the place and shut the electricity off. I also assume that the fire that’s happened today is the work of some wrong uns.

This is one of the saddest things imaginable for our town, I can't understand why it couldn't be run as a successful pub. The history that the place has is unrivalled by any other pub in Stoke on Trent. I really doubt whether it could be saved or restored now and when these places are gone they are gone. I will remember The Leopard as a pub with real heart, regardless of what day of the week or what time of day, there would usually be a good stock of local characters in there and you could sense the history of the place. As a community, architectural and cultural asset the council, should in my opinion, have done more to protect and care for this building. This was Burslem's Windsor Castle and when that burnt down in the 90's, millions were spent on putting it right. I genuinely am gutted.

The Leopard was renamed The Tiger in all of Arnold Bennett’s novels of Burslem. I wonder how many other historical pubs have been immortalised in literature in this way?

I believe the Swan is thinly disguised as the Duck(or at least Duck square for Swan square)😁 can't remember if the actual pub is mentioned it's a while since I read the Card.

SV and Jacko both of you are correct. I hope it can be repaired. The landlady Sharon Crisp gave the wife and myself a tour of the place a few years ago. The wallpaper was still on the walls the condition of the floorboards was excellent. The rooms were big with toilets at the end of the landing. Downstairs were a number of tunnels . If my memory serves me right one went to what used to be a brewery on the site that as a lad had a bandstand. Another went to the town hall opposite and there was one which was used by ppl to leave the pub if say the police came in.
Also it was described as the Hilton of the North and I think Ava Gardner stayed there.
So little old Burslem was home to the Hilton and Wembley of the north.

The Tiger is also in The Old Wives Tale which is one of my favourite books.  If I remember correctly it's also in the short story The Death of Simon Fuge.
