Match Thread: Leyton Orient v Port Vale

Good point i think in the end given the circumstances.

Attacking wise i think we probably need a little more, maybe a more proven striker to see us over the line...

Concern with Wilson is that it takes so long for him to get to any sort of level. It's been 3 games and he's had like one shot? He doesn't just look not fit, he is barely involved...I know it happened at the start of the season and he showed how good he can be eventually, but I am concerned we don't have the games to carry him at this point.

Probably get slated for saying but I thought that was an awful game of football between two clubs who looked like they are going nowhere other than midtable.  A fantastic advert for league 2 earlier in the season when we played them, for any neutral watching today, it would have been a shocker and if you had 2 stewards in either goal would have remained goalless.  I get we have injuries but Conlon, Gibbons and Worrall have been playing regularly in the 9 games before where we have been really poor.  I just wanted something to get me out of my seat but there was nothing there at all. I don't get why we have the keeper in injury time acting like we are nil nil at Man City, they were dreadful and I think any of the other top teams would have won there today.

The only positives were yet another good showing from Hall and Walker who were excellent but we desperately need another midfielder bringing in before next week.  If the manager wants to persist with that formation, it has to be Cass, Hall and Jones as the back 3.  Smith and Martin has the wide centre backs offer nothing going forward which you need if playing this way and if we are going to play with no wingers and 2 up front, it means Amoo should not be out there, he will never ever be a striker.  Sorry for the moan but I just don't see how we are going to turn this around and what looked like a great season is turning looks like it is going horribly wrong.  I hope I am proved wrong but unless we get some creativity into that team this season will turn in a damp squib.

KTF…. as us realists keep getting told!

Re Wilson, I agree. He has undoubted quality, but it’s a real concern that a striker who has Premier League minutes with one of the best teams in European football is basically buggered around 55 mins into a League 2 match whilst still only in his mid-20’s…..???

Mentioned this on another thread. It took a long time after a full pre season to get fit, how long can we carry him for? Offered very little since coming back into the side, I thought he pressed well today, but again looked knackered and was no threat at all.

I get he’s still coming back to fitness, but he’s got to be offering a lot more fit or not, than he is doing.

I think that knee injury at Derby absolutely ruined him.

I got stick for questioning whether he is a player to rely on for a promotion push. He's undoubtedly great, but it took him 7 games to score his first and to look fit. We're now 3 games into his recovery. He has 4 league goals. We can't keep waiting for him to look fit. We need goals pronto. He's the only striker with any real experience.

I'm not saying he's bad, just not the main man. Rushing Proctor back against Walsall looks a greater disaster by the game. Signing two players with minimal experience to bridge the gap also looks questionable.

Yes, I cannot fathom why we signed two youth team strikers, one fine, but why two? I saw nothing from Edmundson against Salford and they were/are a very poor side IMO. So why haven’t we moved for an experienced striker? Surely we must have been in for Loft? I can understand the Politic situation, but he isn’t a natural striker nor was he starting away, although that type of wild card my well have produced the goods in a tight game like today. But yes, very odd. I suspect we’ve seen the last of Rodney though.

Reading the comments back I can’t understand the negativity on here. A depleted Vale squad have just come back from a really tough L2 team who will definitely be competing for play off places with a point. We have stopped the sequence of losses, looking  really solid at the back in the process for 1st time since probably around September/October. Something to build on to get the season going again. We are only just off the playoffs and auto places with 20+ games to go and most of the teams in and around us have to come to VP.

It will come good keep the faith.

The reason for the negativity is (in my view) some of the absentees that make us depleted aren't going to be with us for a while.

I don't like what's been said about Conlon 'making decisions' and 'seeing specialists'. Gibbons was in tears and has a history of long-term hamstring injuries. That's two of our best three players potentially out for the long term. We've also permanently lost a creative maverick who could be trusted to turn games and would have bagged points for us himself before May.

Those three losses, and the seemingly distant return of Proctor, leaves us with an available squad which I think will struggle to consistently compete in the top 7 of this league.

It's no ones fault. We've got unlucky. Imagine losing JMW, Dodds, and Loft in 12/13. I doubt we'd have gone up if that had been the case. Maybe Flitters will pull one out of the hat. I just think we're a fair bit weaker than we were on Dec 31st. I was ultra optimistic but Gibbo + Conlon + Politic is a massive blow to any League 2 team.

Well for me, anything other than promotion really will be disappointing when all is said and done. We’ve effectively got 2 managers who have got promotions under their respective belts and it’s not has if they haven't been backed.

Negativity from me is because I though they were they for the taking. They looked knackered 2nd half and had no danger. Earlier in the season we would have buried them, yet today, we didn’t even try. We were happy to take the 0-0, DC and co telling players to come off slowly at 0-0 when we’re on top isn’t something I want to see. Stone holding onto the ball towards then end when we had a potential overload for a counter attack. It’s just too negative, we defended well, but when you play a side not on it you have to create something.

I just don’t think it’s a great achievement to get a point at a side 13th in the league. Why is that such a superb result? I don’t think they’ll be up there come the end of the season, they draw too many games and looked bang average today. We’re better away from home than at home, so we need to be looking to take 3 points away from home. I think my other disappointment is that we seem to be fixed into this 532 no matter what. Today would have been perfect to swap to a back 4 second half. Why bring amoo and Wilson off for the two young lads? Go 4 at the back with Amoo on the wide right and have a go.  A point ain’t bad, and the clean sheet is very good but I’m just frustrated that they were there to be beaten and we didn’t even try.

Good point in my opinon. We got a clean sheet away from home. Ok we didnt score, but we are down to the bare bones, and meawhile the players that are fit have another 90 minutes under their belts.

Like last season, first shore up the defence, then look to improve further up the pitch.

Its very frustrating, but really where do people think that we are going to get an eperienced goal scorer from in the January transfer window? Anyone half decent who isnt one step off a pension is contracted. You could probbly get a striker from somewhere else, but there is so much dross around. Do we really want someone elses Guthrie or Robinson?

We did some fantastic business in the summer to attract Wilson and Proctor. A great combination of experience and youth. Sadly both got injured. Proctor was just bad luck, Wilson was probably more likely given his history. Thats the chance we have to take given our budget and our sensible policy of not causing problems within the squad by rushing out to get someone and breaking the wage structure... Look at Salford who are throwing good money after bad on players wages and where are they?

I may be proved wrong but anyone on here who thinks that we will get an experienced striker this week needs to have a think.

I think there is more to come even from this depleted squad, they just need to find a route, a method, a way to score goals. It might be from the wing, could be through the middle, who knows but I'm sure DC will be working on it in the week.

Lastly, as someone else said earlier, I'm sure our heavy clay based pitch doesnt help our injury problems.

No doubt promotion is the target and I’ve said before DC has failed if he doesn’t deliver but we still lots of games to go. It’s far far from over. This league is fuckin <ovf censored>. Everyone will beat each other as it’s proven.

You also have to put where we are in perspective. We have suffered horrendous luck with long term injuries to arguably our best 4 players. Tell me a team in this league which could cope with that? Nobody, yet we are still very much in the mix. We are just working our way through it and need a little time to adjust. On the evidence of the last 2 games it coming.
