Would love to know when our injured players are likely to be back.

I know DC tries to keep this close to his chest on the theory he doesn’t want the opposition to know.
But as it seems most teams have now sussed us out anyway you wonder if it really matters.

Would be nice to know if there’s any light at the end of the tunnel for our injured players

noticed gibbo holding his groin on tues, then stopped strecthing.😌

Was a tad concerned to hear Clarke reference specialists/experts and not ruling out surgery for Conlon.

Fingers crossed it's more short-term or we're seriously on the ropes.

Whilst it's up to Clarke how much he shares (doesn't really bother me), the larger issue is how many of our players have had substantial injuries.

doesnt sound good😑

Wasnt he talking specifically about the amount of hamstring injuries,  of which we had a lot of last season? Way too many for it to be a coincidence.

From my recollection, he wasn't that specific, but was generally critical of the lack of proper fitness and, from memory again, he suggested that this had resulted in an excess of injuries above the average.

To be successful at this level you need a lot of luck with injuries. Askey suffered when his first choice 11 couldn’t be picked and we’re in a similar situation, albeit with a much stronger squad, now.

The other dilemma is that when players return they’re not up to speed but need minutes.  Wilson looks miles away but we have to play him to get his fitness back up to the required level.

Currently we’re expecting 2 kids to do the job up top while our first choice strikers recover, our most creative midfielder is injured and our new centre back went off on Tuesday night. Combine that with two players out serving suspensions and it’s easy to see why we’re struggling.

If FGR, or whoever, lost their 2 main strikers plus a couple of other influential players they’d drop like a stone.

Injuries don’t take your players away they disrupt consistency and familiarity with the guy next to you. One day Pett is getting a partnership going with Conlon, the next it’s Walker etc. The defence is never steady and constantly changing. The revolving door of injuries is part impact but it has got to be management of those injuries as well. I know it’s not popular to say but why on earth did we sign two strikers designed to be our big hitters, on good pro wages to be attracted in their prime, when neither has ever played a full season? I know Rodney was supposed be decent and help out but.....

Walker the same, in and out with injuries that fit identically with his past seasons. That makes no sense at all, to think it would be better here than every other club they’ve been at. I suppose based on that the inevitable rise, injuries then fall was all but predictable. That’s my one sticking point with the recruitment because obviously the squad man for man is totally incomparable and much much better. The player’s quality is good enough to get out of this league, even with an injury or two, but it doesn’t matter if DC goes out and signs prime Pires to fire in crosses for Bergkamp if they’re injured.

The irony with all this, is that one of the things DC was most critical of when he arrived at Vale Park was the poor standards of fitness and the high levels of absence through injuries for which, he pointed the finger at the previous management/coaching staff!  What went wrong this time around DC?

I think DC was rereferring to hamstring injuries, no club or manager can legislate against an Achilles, a freak stomach injury or nearly demolishing the goal in Halls case.

The best clubs in the world with the finest medical facilities still get players injured.

Three things have to happen to sign a player, we have to want them to sign, they have to want to join us and the two sides need to agree on wages. I suspect the wages is the issue in a lot of cases. We have no idea if our signings are our first choice or our 10 for the position.

Thats the most sensible post you have ever done.

I think you're missing the irony--of course players' get injured at all clubs, but DC was very critical of PV's previous management regarding the history last season of injuries. The irony that I think you're missing is that despite his criticism of the previous regime and the implication that they hadn't managed injuries well enough, we have probably had more longer-term injuries and more players' unable to play than last season!  People in glass houses............................................

We lost Wilson to a freak bone fracture during a goal celebration.

Last season we lost a player to long term injury after it was widely reported they were allegedly allowed to play rugby in training.

Not quite the same.

I think we've been unlucky too, that said I seem to remember a few years back 3 or 4 players having issues after leaving VP(around 03/04- 06/07).  Both Brooker and McPhee ended their careers relatively prematurely due to injuries(McPhee more so) but I'm sure I read once VP was known amongst pros for being on the heavy side as pitch and if you played it regularly over a few seasons perhaps it had some effect on more injury prone players? Obviously the training ground would come into that too as they are probably on that more than the actual pitch thinking about it.

Of course it's probably been relaid in the 15-18 years since but as I say sure I remember it being mentioned at some point(could be wrong?)

I completely agree. The pitch is absolutely awful. Heavy, bobbily, with a thick clay like base, it needs binning for a modern pitch. It isn’t responsible for all our injuries but we do have a lot of lower body injuries to legs that the old pitch will not help.

In fact if we keep that quagmire of a pitch after the Robbie Williams concert, I dread to think what it will end up like.

Forget fans raising money for the Lorne Street…it should be on a pitch!

Yes but you can’t help impact injuries, which is what the majority of our injuries seem to be rather than a hamstring going.

Depends if that impact is on a heavy, clay like pitch which may make a difference if it had been a modern, cushioned pitch.

Last year Clarke condemned our injury record and said he'd never really had more than a few players injured at a time. He said things would change.

Sadly what's changed is our injury curse has more than cancelled out his lucky rabbit's foot.

The players have changed, and I understand so has our medical and fitness department. Is it the pitch to blame? Something to do with the training facilities? Just more bad luck?

Askey must have a wry smile on his face after DC criticised his unacceptable injury record.
