Lucas can be great with the 'dark arts' (his pulled hammy at Scunny etc) but I honestly think he thought he could get away with leaving one on McKirdy here. The way he writhes around after despite him leading with his foot shows it. Trying to be far too clever and has probably lost his job as an EFL keeper.

People may want to argue but there won't be a single neutral who will view that and think it wasn't a red. As blatant as it gets.

Yeah he probably does that every game in the chaos of a corner or something, but that one was too obvious and he really misjudged it. I think he should just concentrate on the goalkeeping side. When he comes back he will be contrite and he’ll redeem himself before the end of the season, which is only halfway through.

The sending off has been seen as the turning point of the game…

I don’t think that’s what people are trying to argue. The game continued at the same trajectory after the sending off.

The sending off robbed us of the chance to regroup during the half time break and make tactical changes and/or subs.

If we go in at half time level and with 11 players then we have a chance. If we’d won 2-1 with a storming second half performance yesterday then very few people would be talking about our failure to get to grips with Swindon during the first 45.

Lucas kept Vale in the game until that point. Despite comments to the contrary I have watched the incident countless times and not convinced it was a foul. The game did not change on this incident. After the opening ten minutes I knew a heavy defeat was coming.

It’s as blatant a foul and red card you could possibly have it football. You can’t go in with studs up like that - it’s just not even debatable. It’s a red. Of course the game changed on this incident. It was 1-1. Yes we hadn’t played well, but that it was 1 minute from half time, we’ve done this numerous times this season, changed it up and come out a different side. I’ve got no idea why you think it’s game over at 1-1 just because we struggled first half. I personally don’t think we lose this game with 11 players. DC would have changed it round and there’s no way we would have been so lethargic second half. I just don’t understand the view that the keeper being sent off and giving away a penalty didn’t change the game. Reds always change games, especially when it’s your keeper a minute before half time and gifting them a goal.

He didn’t keep us in the game either. For all their domination, how many shots on target were there? I can remember one decent save, but it’s a save I would expect any professional keeper to make, that’s his job. They’re poor finishing kept us in the game and a screamer by Harratt. Covalon lost us that game and shouldn’t play again Imo, just too much of a liability.

I think the difference in McKirdy is that it looked like they just tell him to run around the front the front line, drop back if he wants to pick the ball up,just giving him a free reign to do what he wants instead of telling him a position to play in and its working for them and him

Maybe that’s where we should’ve played him if he had stayed. Pett and garrity central and mckirdy playing in front of them in the Conlon role and give him a free run. That’s where he hurts teams and it’s proving this season. He looked a threat all day yesterday with his extra yard of pace.

Yep, and he looked better than anything we had frustratingly. We need to do something similar with Politic and we need a midfield that is as good as theres because we were miles away.

That’s 3 home games - Rochdale, Walsall and now Swindon - where we have been made to look an incredibly poor side by sides who have literally passed us off the park in midfield.

Rochdale and Walsall were not in contention and are still not, and Swindon’s team was literally cobbled together albeit has gelled.

So I feel we’re entitled to expect better and why I now don’t think we’ll get promoted. As I said, FGR seem unlikely to falter, Tranny, Swindon and Mansfield are all on unbelievable runs, Northampton are tough to beat as are Exeter, Sutton seem to be durable as well surprisingly.

I reckon we’ll need 85 points for top 3, which is 50 points from 24. That’s a heck of a run - 16 wins, 2 draws, 6 defeats for example.

Harratt and Hall aside, it really was a day to forget.

Re Covolan, I thought he saw McKirdy jumping at him with no chance of getting the ball and thought 'if that's how you want to play it' and brought his leg up to counter it.  Very stupid really.  It was an easy claim for him, McKirdy wasn't going to hurt him, and Cov could have rolled around, as the victim, and got the little #### sent off instead!

Yesterday we looked like a team who simply haven't played much competitive football recently.

I'm only judging the first half and we lacked cohesion as a team, lacked match sharpness and maybe match fitness.

Against a decent team, who were well drilled, who had match sharpness and were fit. They also had a forward who was very much in form and loving his football. He was very busy and looked a class above at times.

This reminds me of the start of the season as it seems to me that we need to get back the qualities I mentioned above.

Plenty of time left. Level heads required.

I can't see how you can't see its not a foul!

This is how he catches it. Normal. One knee up, feet facing the ground. Ball is in his hands. Job done. Drop down like that and restart play.

This is what happens next - his right knee out like a kung fu kick, right angle to his body, studs towards McKirdy. Screenshots don't do justice just how moronic it is. He catches the ball and then decides he's going to stud McKirdy in the stomach. Why on earth would he do that? He's got the ball! Drop down straight! It's not a natural/understandable position however we try and interpret it. There is no reason to have his legs like that.

The more I watch it the more I think it's a moment of sheer madness where he decides to leave one on McKirdy. If you watch the video you see his leg fly, unnaturally, into McKirdy. Stupid and very dirty. Hate to be one of the screenshot lads but its a disgraceful challenge. Would be angry if we were 3-0 up in the 90th minute.

People will know I've backed Lucas to the hilt here all season. I've backed the daft errors he's made. This was appalling and, whether people want to argue about it costing us the game, just isn't on.

I can see Covolan’s right foot there and it doesn’t seem to be near McKirdy’s chest. Would it have been a red between two outfield players??

I thought Hall did some good things but looked a bit loose at times and didn't seem to look very comfortable as a left CB in a back three.

First half on front of us in the Bycars he saw a lot of the ball and basically held the defence together. His distribution isn’t great, and that’s why we can’t have him and Smith in the same defence IMO. In a 433 I’d say Smith drops out, and given how alarmingly bad we were at defending their corners 1st half I think something needs to change in defence anyway.

But I think yesterday gave us more questions than answers. Formation. Our style of play. Key players in key positions. We need to very careful that we don’t stray too far from what got us into the top 3.

Good points made but I do feel our squad is crying out for a different formation rather than sticking to 352.

I think we have become very predictable the way we play. I never I thought I would say that about a DC team.
