All the Vale players pressures and harried evinced by the fact we made a game of it. Making a nuisance of yourself high up the field and chasing around isn't enough. What great touches did Garrity have?

Gibbo and Conlon did much more than Garrity with the ball at their feet although Gibbo didn't have his best game.

Again you’re judging Gibbo and Garrity by the things they did or didn’t do creatively. Gibbo was excellent defensively and shouldn’t have gone off for Benning, Garrity playing higher up took the game to them, he won the ball back, made a nuisance of himself, pressured them into mistakes and when he got the ball he kept it to keep the pressure on them. Not everything a player does on the pitch is about what he creates in terms of chances or goals. Football is much more than that without the ball too.

As for the game, it really should have been 2-2 when Dennis rounded the keeper but the only reason we were playing today is because he did it against Burton so can’t grumble too much that he scuffed his shot. We had them wobbling massively at the time and who knows what would have happened if Politic could have just rolled it into an empty net to equalise, the roof would have come off. Their manager made all those changes shortly after for a reason, we had them on the ropes for a decent spell generating chance after chance in the second half.

The difference in technical skill was evident and we just got picked off with ease on the break as I expected we would.

I thought their following was poor numbers wise and significantly poorer still noise wise. Might as well have been playing Salford.

Disappointed to read of Wilson getting constantly slagged off in an earlier post. You can tell he wasn’t match sharp, no surprise first game back after a bad fracture is it? I don’t know what planet some fans live on at times. It would have been interesting to see what would have happened if we had Proctor back today as we lacked that strength up top.

Good run out for the injured lads and despite a loss actually a bit of a confidence boost I think from how well we played during spells. League 2 teams would not be able to cope with some of our football today.

I've realised that Paul is the guy who was banging on about how we should re-sign Pope in the summer. So don't feel the need to argue with his opinion anymore

Rubbish. At least let them know they've had a game . No crunching tackles, no real fight from DC today, hopefully because we are in league not cup mode.

I love our owners but no card payment allowed, yet advertised, car park full at 1330 yet loads of free spaces, and turnstiles not open.. Anyone else would get <ovf censored>, hope we dont.

The free spaces were reserved for media apparently.

I didn’t buy anything but heard about the contactless thing not working, I agree totally that that’s not good enough as it was specifically advertised by Vale that it’s now available in every stand. People aren’t going to be impressed at queueing for 20 mins only to not be able to actually buy anything, bit tinpot that.

Well I thoroughly enjoyed that. Was less frustrated with the first half than most, thought we blatantly set out to be compact and restrict their chances, (which we generally did effectively), stay in the game and then have a real go in the second half, which again we did by hitting them with Politic and Harratt (who looks a boss player). So can't argue with DC's tactics, think it maximised our slim chance to get something out of it.

The first goal was admittedly poor, but I think more down to communication than any individual I'd say; looked like both defenders dropped, and then both went to ball at same time, kind of thing that happens with an unfamiliar back 3. We missed Jones, having Smith instead of a left footer there made a big difference, especially to our build up play.

Thought Cass was generally excellent though, drove us forward and combined brilliantly with the indefatigable Woz all game.

Lots of positives, especially Harratt's goal, and the 10 minutes before and after the goal were fantastic. Thought Garrity drove that, and they really struggled to cope with us running at them, we were getting behind them at will, which considering they're a prem team is a massive testament to the quality we have now.

Good minutes in the legs for everyone, especially Wilson and Amoo who both looked rusty, and if we play like that against anyone in our division we will roll them.

UTV!

Could have written this post myself youth. Noticed how well Cass did also.

The car park was weird. Not only were there plenty of spaces, I walked through there at the end of the game and was nobody was getting in their cars, no cars were queueing to get out of there.

Think those spaces were made available for media.  That would perhaps explain why no one were getting in their cars to leave.

I could be wrong.... I often am! 🙂

Thought Cass was excellent today. Everything good started with him. Garrity had a fantastic second half, his workrate is phenomenal. Anyone who didn't see what he brought knows nothing about football. New lad looked good, good couple of flick ons and good touch and took up some natural goalscoring positions.

At 2-1, they were panicking and kept giving the ball away. The difference was that they were so clinical in spite of very little attacking play second half. Their number 28 ran the show first half but once we got tighter he wasn't really in it second half. Play like that against league 2 teams and we would absolutely annihilate them.

Atmosphere second half was as good as it's been in years. Really enjoyed it.
