Match Thread: FAC3 Port Vale v Brentford

Today reminded me of the Brighton cup tie in 13/14. And not just the weather either.

Plenty of endeavour but Brentford just had too much for us. No disgrace in that, all that TV money and their turnover and budget dwarfs ours.

They had extra gears to use, and once they were ahead they were able to use the fact that we were chasing the game against us. One or two minor gripes about the manner in which we got sucker punched though.

A decent workout anyway, we got minutes into players’ legs after a month without a game, and our new striker broke his duck. So there were a couple of positives.

Well I thoroughly enjoyed that. Was less frustrated with the first half than most, thought we blatantly set out to be compact and restrict their chances, (which we generally did effectively), stay in the game and then have a real go in the second half, which again we did by hitting them with Politic and Harratt (who looks a boss player). So can't argue with DC's tactics, think it maximised our slim chance to get something out of it.

The first goal was admittedly poor, but I think more down to communication than any individual I'd say; looked like both defenders dropped, and then both went to ball at same time, kind of thing that happens with an unfamiliar back 3. We missed Jones, having Smith instead of a left footer there made a big difference, especially to our build up play.

Thought Cass was generally excellent though, drove us forward and combined brilliantly with the indefatigable Woz all game.

Lots of positives, especially Harratt's goal, and the 10 minutes before and after the goal were fantastic. Thought Garrity drove that, and they really struggled to cope with us running at them, we were getting behind them at will, which considering they're a prem team is a massive testament to the quality we have now.

Good minutes in the legs for everyone, especially Wilson and Amoo who both looked rusty, and if we play like that against anyone in our division we will roll them.

UTV!

If we paid them less respect then they would have cut us to ribbons with their passing. They are three divisions and several million pounds craftier than us.

Their second goal was a carbon copy to Rochdale’s winner against us in September where Benning got caught wrong side. The first goal was very similar to Sunderland’s goal in the league cup back in August when Worrall pressed a goal kick and they worked an overload down our right. Both goals are an occupational hazard of the system we play.

Brentford are a really good team.

Both intelligence wise and speed of feet they were streets ahead

But I agree with MBE , I can't understand any negative comments. We gave it a go. Had we gone gung-ho from the off we'd of been 3 down at half time.

They brought a couple of big hitters on to see the game out.

Their worst player would be miles better than our best player .

It's gone now. A massive promotion humdinger next week and let's send the ponytailed one home with zero points and a few scuffs and bruises after Smith gives it him .

He will be drying his tears with his ponytail. Fair play to him though, he has grown it pretty damn quick: extensions maybe 🤔🤔🤔

Not sure of anyone else picked up on this but I think Pett was asked to do a man mark job on Bidstrup second half, the blonde lad in the middle wearing 28. He ran the show first half but Pett never let him out of sight 2nd half and he was far less effective.

Spot on, it took 49 minutes for Vale to put a tackle in on no. 28, who ran the show first half. After that Pett was closing him down and forcing him back which allowed us to move further forward. In saying that no.28 was good and I liked his range of passing, any chance of getting him on loan ??

Chased everything. Pressurised they’re players into errors and created chances for us. He did lots. He did much more than Pett and Conlon today.

So what did he do.

Harried, pressed and generally made a nuisance of himself high up the pitch, which allowed to push the rest of the side much further forwards. Also showed some great touches. What did the others (such as Conlon etc) do that made Garrity look, according to you, 'awful again'?

All the Vale players pressures and harried evinced by the fact we made a game of it. Making a nuisance of yourself high up the field and chasing around isn't enough. What great touches did Garrity have?

Gibbo and Conlon did much more than Garrity with the ball at their feet although Gibbo didn't have his best game.

I heard word that turnstile issues led to many people forcing open a gate in the Railway? Would that explain the seemingly understated attendance?

I think the Stewards opened the gate as a relief turnstile but it quickly got rushed by the sheer amount of people still stuck outside. To be clear I don’t think from watching up top that it got violently forced open or stormed, but rushed as there was only like 2 stewards were on it.

Complete disaster outside if I’m honest in terms of managing the anticipated crowds, there were about 7 snaking massive queues for 4 turnstiles. They should have barricaded the gates with those metal portable fence things, had a few stewards on them and opened them from the beginning as extra relief turnstiles.
