Match Thread: FAC3 Port Vale v Brentford

First half was flat but if we fly out the traps and play like we did 2nd half, we would have been done on the counter and be dead at half-time. We had to sit in and ensure it was tight. We were in the game and, if Politic makes any form of decent contact, would have been 2-2 with 15 minutes to go.

What did he do, was anonymous first half I doubt he touched the ball. Second half he put in one poor cross, he had a free header from a good position which he put tamely over the bar and that was about it.  Brentford passed the ball around him, he was chasing shadows all game.

I don't know what you were watching but it wasn't the same game as me mate. Brentford passed the ball around every one of our players today, in the first half, yet you've singled out Garrity? Sorry, not having it. Garrity played nearly as well as he has been all season, against PL opposition IMHO.

So what did he do.

I'll leave you to watch the highlights guys. We had 10-15 minutes, that's it. I just wanted to go more at them but we didnt.

They're a Premier League team, Dave. I have no idea what you were expecting. You can't go at them for 90 minutes, otherwise they'd have carved us up on the break even more than they did and it'd be game over at HT. We were a slice of luck away from 2-2 in the 75th minute.

Yeah im disappointed a side in league 2 that hasn’t played for a month couldnt dominate a premiership side in 12th for 90 minutes….

So what did he do.
Harried, pressed and generally made a nuisance of himself high up the pitch, which allowed to push the rest of the side much further forwards. Also showed some great touches. What did the others (such as Conlon etc) do that made Garrity look, according to you, 'awful again'?

Their quality showed all through the game, they'd always got a higher gear to go to.

Their ability to play on the break was impressive although it didn't help with Pett, the supposed defensive midfield player, out of position for their first 3 goals.  Garrity was awful again.

Worrall excellent again, dream debut for Harratt and great goal.

“Garrity was awful again.”  It’s the again I find bizarre considering he’s scored four in his last five games before today??

Imo, today was a "free hit", didn't expect much from the game but was a little disappointed with the first half, as it was obvious that we were being hammered in the midfield,  when we changed to 442, wow what a 20/25 minutes,  proper gave it a go and the 3rd goal gutted us,  hopefully gave the lads some game time

Great atmosphere,  like the old days , love it

Also Garrity particularly in that 10 minute spell where we mullered them was immense. Energy and pure ratmanship

It is absolutely wonderful to watch garrity when he gets the wind in his sails as he did in the second half. He is an absolute gem and doesn't get anywhere near the praise that he should

First half we sat off too much and paid them to much respect and allowed them to dominate the ball. Yes the first goal comes from bad pass and Worrall being out of position, but they’ve broke with pace and waited for a defender to step out and leave space behind which Cass did. My other criticism is Smith, he cannot play left side of a 3 as it kills our momentum when we get the ball and have to move it quickly out to the left, he just can’t do it there and I felt that he made us lose a few opportunities to play it early out to gibbo, the chance had gone and he was closed down .

Second half we started off pressing higher and gave ourselves a footing in the game, we were much better all over the pitch as we didn’t give them the same time as they had first half. The formation change and forward subs changed the game.   I can understand Amoo and Wilson coming off as they’ve been injured and we needed something different up front. But seeing as we changed to more of a 4 at the back formation I would have left gibbo at left back as he was sound defensively today, Benning IMO cost us the second goal with his positioning and also gave away the peno. Pushing Worrall higher and getting Politic on, coupled with the new forward making a nuisance of himself and pressuring their centre halfs when they had the ball. Add to that the fact that “awful” Garrity was pushing higher  too, winning the ball back, keeping it simple and basically stopping them having it easy when playing out made all the difference. (It just proves that some people judge a player solely by what he does with the ball at his feet creatively and they don’t see the bigger picture if they think Garrity was bad).

Overall plenty of positives to take from that I felt, mainly from the second half.

I really don’t understand negativity around ANY of our players today. To a man they all worked their knackers of. We had Amoo and Wilson both coming back from a long spell out, both blowing after 25 mins, especially Amoo who chased down passes at the back.

Yes some of our lads could have played with a bit more composure on the ball, including fans favourites but to single out players today is ridiculous. Give them a break!

All we can ever ask in a game like that is maximum effort which they all gave today.

Judge them over this crucial period in the league when it really matters v Swindon, Salford & FGR
