Surely we can compete this season

- BBC asking whether a more spectacular own goal is possible ?

I can remember one much more spectacular at Vale Park.  You have to be a long serving fan to remember this one.  It was scored by the great Stan Steele in his final game for Vale in 1968, and in his third spell with the club.

We lost 3-0 at home to Aldershot.  Stan received the ball on his chest, facing the Lorne Street, about 30 yards out from our goal (we were defending the Bycars End).  He swivelled his body and volleyed a back pass to Stuart Sharratt in goal.  The ball shot into Stuart's top left hand corner of the goal, giving him no chance of getting anywhere near it.  It was almost as if it had been aimed with laser like accuracy.  If it had been a goal for us we would have been saying it should be goal of the season.  Best own goal I have ever seen anywhere live or on TV.

Sandy Brown's header at Goodson and Willie Donachie's back pass at Hampden come close.  Anyone else remember Stan's effort?

Dean Glover scored a belter - I think it was against Ipswich - when he lobbed the ball back over his head to the keeper. Sadly Grewy had come off his line and the ball flew over his head into the net!!

Was that a Tuesday night game?  I seem that have Cambridge in my head, I was due to go but ended up missing it.

Sure he also did it away at Barnsley, over Musselwhite's head I think - one of those no-look-overhead-lofted-backpass to the keeper that he was fond of doing.

Seem to recall it was late in the game and cost us either a win or a draw (can't remember which!)

(.......I knew then that he'd make a crap manager!  🤣 )

I seem to remember Bobby Thomson, the former Wolves and England player who played for us in the mid seventies scoring an absolutely bizarre own goal (against Rotherham I think? - not sure) when he was defending a cross whilst running back to the goal, and went to clear the ball in to row Z with a well placed hoof. Instead, he absolutely smashed it in to the top corner of our net - brilliant finish. No TV cameras to record it, but it stuck in my mind, because of the shock on everyone's face after he'd done it - he really hammered it, and it was unstoppable.
