This is the squad BTW...

The Lions have been sent home although a handful are involved in the Big Bash - although it would be an odd sign to ignore members of the squad and bring in someone from outside it.

That said - the make-up of that squad is just dreadful. Neither spinner has done enough to be in contention. The only back-up opener hasn't done anything since a single big score 18 months ago.

Not the best of squads then. 11 of them aged over 30 aswell so not likely to get any better. I don't know why we just didn't take root and stokes and the rest of them just pick alot of young uncapped players and give them a chance. People like Garton who you mentioned and Parkinson is an excellent spinner. Be better giving these youngsters a game and lose 5 nil than play all these others butler burns bairstow ect lose 5 nil and continue to put in poor low scores in test cricket but yet keep getting picked.

it completely baffles me why Livingstone wasn't in that squad. Bang in form, a useful all-rounder with his spin option and still young. He wasn't even in the Lions back-up squad - at least Parkinson was in there.

It clearly baffled Livingstone -

I'm not hyping Livingstone as the next big thing. He could well struggle a bit but I would argue that he certainly deserves a chance to give it go. So many of that squad have been given multiple chances - Lawrence, Burns etc - it seems odd that a man bang in form was completely omitted especially when he has a better FC average than many of those in the squad.

In short - it's decisions like that which show why there's no confidence in the England selection policy.

Should be in the 11 livingstone. He’s technically a decent player. Is he in the bash?

Only they said on BT we’re looking at bringing Mahmood into the squad and he’s in the bash currently

No sadly not -

"Tom Abell (Brisbane Heat), Harry Brook (Hobart Hurricanes) and Saqib Mahmood (Sydney Thunder) are all involved in the BBL."

Smacks a bit of desperation. They're not short of bowlers out there currently, but seem to be make the wrong selections for the prevailing conditions--no front line spinner for the second Test and 5 other pretty samey bowlers, but picked Leach for the 1st Test when we were crying out for another quick to be in the XI.

Whatever we do about the bowling, the real issue is the fragility of the batting with only Malan & Root looking worthy of a place in the line-up!  Doesn't matter what the bowlers do if we keep having batting collapses all the time.

Sending back the Lions' squad only magnifies the total lack of proper planning for this whole Ashes series debacle--the ECB and Test team management should all hang their heads in shame, learn from these mistakes and never repeat them again--obvious--but then it is the ECB and that's why I've just noticed that flying pig overhead!!!

It's the Aussie bowlers that trigger the batting collapses, certainly Starc, Lyon, Cummins and Hazlewood are too good and the ones they bought in for the 2nd test and have in the wings according to the Aussie commentators aren't too shabby either.

Until England have at least one if not two genuinely quick world class fast bowlers and a test class spinner we're always gonna struggle down under. This team is just not good enough and hasn't any depth to compete every day for 5 days against this Aussie team, there are some fine players in the England side and it will have it's moments but that's about it.

I think we can give them a game but not down under.

Batting is the issue for me. The bowling attack for them in this test was nothing special, especially on that pitch. Dreadful batting from us imo

IMHO 593 bowlers win marches, you have to take 20 wickets to win a test match and the bowling attack England have on this tour will struggle to take 20 wickets unless the pitch is dodgy.

A bowling attack that includes Mitchell Starc who bowls consistently at 145Km/Hr+ (90mi/hr+) in Aussie conditions and Nathan Lyon is gonna trump an England attack containing seamers who struggle to reach 135 Km/hr, Wood excepted although he appears to be struggling with fitness.

We see it time and time again in Aussie conditions, England can compete in England 'cause we generally breed  superb seam and swing bowlers.
