Cricket - the Ashes 2021

I create this thread more in trepidation than hope... oh well!

So... Stokes is back but with barely any match time... a clutch of fast bowlers are out... the top three hasn't really been sorted... Ali's retirements leaves a spin conundrum (especially when you add in his batting)... Jimmy and Stu are nearing pensionable age... so have England really got a hope?

Well, the Aussies are missing a captain and a wicketkeeper while Smith, Labuschagne and Warner apart, the batting looks flaky. However, they still boast a ferocious fast bowling outfit and reliable spin in Lyon.

Please use this thread to discuss the ups and down of the series...

Still gutted the series got cancelled in September due to covid which I had tickets for.

The only highlight from 2020/lockdown was my new love/appreciation for cricket. Beautiful sport when done right.

Shout out to Danielle Wyatt in the women's team also. Great player and massive vale fan and overall a nice person.

Played against Danielle a few times in club cricket when she used to play for whitmore.

Love cricket i do, used to be half decent but not played properly for a few years now.

This is the proper cricket for me. I love seeing us dominate in 50 over games and to some extent the twenty twenties but this is the pinnacle, can’t wait. Just hope we don’t embarrass ourselves

Can't see anything but a 5-0 hiding. Our batting is so brittle. Regularly collapse from 128-1 to 165-6 , happening far too often. Nobody seems to be able to occupy the crease any more.

Glen Mcgrath prepare yourself to be correct again with your prediction unless the weather intervenes .

i think it will be closer than you think cant see 5-0 these two teams are fairly equal bar one bloke (cheat and cry  baby smith ) if we get a draw or victory in the first test the aussie media will give them some much stick. one thing missing will be the barmy army there will be ex pats in the crowd but im sure the vocal support would of helped create an atmosphere

As with almost any series over there we go in wondering just how bad its going to be. And it could be a bad tour. There are many weaknesses on our side..

  • Positions 1-3 in the batting are weak (although my faith in Hameed hasnt been tested yet)
  • We will miss Moeen who as part of a strong lower middle order have got us out of numerous holes.
  • Haven't really got a number 3 although personally I think we should be agressive and give Malan the nod.

That said Australia are not without issues as summarised by Rob.

The key for me will rest on which team have the batters that can last long enough to tire out the seamers. Both teams are reliant on seam and pace, which in a hot country can only last for so long. Our problem in previous tours is that we have been blown away by their chief destroyers whilst our bowlers toil in the heat as Smith or Labuschagne hang around. Whilst its tough and it isnt pretty we really do need to do the hard yards as a batting unit and stick around. Its a short intense period with small gaps between tests, if we can grind out a couple of long innings in the early tests we give oursleves a chance.

I hope that by this time tomorrow morning this hasn't already got ugly. Weather may save us in this test, and Anderson has wisely been rested. Hopefully we get to bat first, stick around and start to grind down those Aussie quicks. Problem with us batting first is that it could get nasty..

I suspect they'll be looking to Anderson & Woakes for the second Test in Adelaide--it's a day/nighter with pink ball and England are expecting more seam/air movement there because of these factors.

Since they lost to India in January this year, Australia had been unbeaten at The Gabba since losing to the Windies in 1988--not impregnable, but a darned good fortress for the Aussies!

I'm expecting Australia to win the series, but certainly not by 5-0.  Sure, in Starc, Cummins & Hazlewood, they have a trio of the best quick bowlers in world cricket currently, but the whole series is being played in such a relatively tight timeframe, which means the liklihood of one or more of these great bowlers being injured/rested is much higher this time around.

The Aussie batting line-up can also be a little 'fragile' and in Anderson, Broad, Woakes, Robinson, Wood & Stokes we have our own formidable and varied quick attack--we shall see--keep the faith!
