Match Thread: Port Vale v Walsall

I seem to remember Ashley Westwood went down like he'd been shot against Griff a few minutes into a Crewe Vale derby game. It took the sting right out of the game and gave us a booking straight from the kick-off for a player involved in all the action. I thought he was a little <ovf censored> at the time but now looking back it was inspired. Something similar would really have them confused.

Just another game for me. I was more excited for the Oldham game than I am this one. I don’t know one Walsall fan and have never perceived them as a rival.

My worry is that whenever we overstate a game or hype it up we always fall short. It happened against Bradford and again at Oldham.

What do we think the home crowd will be? The Oldham loss probably knocked a good few hundred off it.

Not in the least concerned tonight about anything but 3 points to the mighty Vale. Small minded Warsaw will realise the gap in standards. Stand up all Vale players and show them why we are 3rd in the Division. UTV.

It would have been second in the division if we hadn't panicked at the end of the game last Saturday.  You're correct--we need to see a bit of backbone form the Vale players this evening--come on you Vale!

We’ve stooped into the sewer of low automatic promotion. Let’s get back where we belong. We might as well keep them where they belong at the same time, win win.

I think a red card tonight is nailed on. Both sets of players should be right at it & I can see some of the Walsall players getting a bit excited with their biggest away following of the season.

Just hope we keep our discipline & don't do anything daft to jeapordise the chance of 3 points.

Exactly, let them be overzealous and rush around like maniacs for the first half hour. If we take our time, play football and stay calm we’ll just sweep them aside. Their only chance is turning it into an 100-free kick war of 8 aside, so don’t give them the chance.

 😇

I would love someone to put the question to a player or the manager “why are you so hyped for this fixture over others?” There is no answer that doesn’t lead to more questions, embarrassment and confusion.

Nobody is openly saying because of Clarke, but it must be doing the rounds at the club behind closed doors based on the comments.

Why would players who didn’t even play for the club under Clarke or a manager who replaced him care about going to face him now?

If he was adored and said the week before he left that he loved the club and would never leave, I get it. That’s an albeit tenuous reason to want to get a cheeky one-up on him. This level of animosity is embarrassing and makes no sense.

If we lose 0-5 tonight, we still trust in and want him now and for the future, and he would still choose us over them.

They've well and truly lost their heads, falling deep into a rabbit hole of DC-hatred. Their season is probably finished already and this is all they've got; contrived anger at a manager who was working in a set up that wasn't great, and left for a better one. A manager they didn't want anyway, and were grateful we took him off their hands. 'Cheers for the Compo!', they declared.

And there we have it. A rational Walsall fans accept that the whipping up of this fixture by Saddlers has a lot to do with a need to inject meaning into an increasingly bleak existence as a football club.

We did the same with Crewe in the Smurthwaite days; we built it up and beat them regularly, and whilst they were probably annoyed, they were too busy getting promoted to care too much. The wins were all we had under Aspin.

Tonight may be the same - a win for them gives the season meaning. Otherwise, their season is basically already finished.
