My opinion of Benning and I hate being critical of any Vale player, I'm a glass half full bloke, but he just makes really basic mistakes and the effort just doesn't look like it's there.

Too many times he just side foots it with the outside of his foot either to the opposition or out of play when he has far more time to actually think about what he's doing and find a man.  It looks really lazy and half ars*d.  Rarely beats his man and puts a decent cross in either when I'm sure he must have the ability.  Defensively gives his man too much room and backs off too much.  He's just really frustrating.

I wouldn't say Benning has been crap. Just not up the level we might have expected. He says so himself. Think he's not fitted in with system so far. Seems to be a bit up when he should be back and back when he should be up.

Not a write off. Thoughts on Amos? Thought he's done pretty well and worth a deal come Jan until the end of the season.

It was interesting in the first few minutes when their no 49 Gordon had two consecutive shots on goal that both players left him unmarked. I wouldn't be critical of either player at this stage but they both have a bit to do to get up to speed. It's a long season and we may need them as time goes on.

I'd argue that having a 'long, illustrious career as a player at a team where fans worship him' is all good and well, if that club wasn't Mansfield Town. So he's very well regarded at a team who in his time there finished in the play-offs once in six seasons. My personal feeling is that his penchant for 'scoring worldies' masked his lack of ability as a player. He's on a one year deal and I'd be hugely surprised if he's here beyond June. It's my assessment that he's on the downward trend and looks every bit a National League 'only ever 80% fit' player.

Side note: I know that we're all loving what's happening at the club and we're in a phase where any criticism or negativity is banned. But people are still allowed opinions on players. We need another great window in the summer and more ruthless decisions from management to get us ready for a tilt at the top half of L1 next season. Let's not kid ourselves that players like Mal Benning should be a part of that journey. If it was down to many posters on here, we'd still be watching Luke Joyce and Scott Brown strut their stuff.

...and whilst I understand and respect your opinion, I disagree with you.  This isn't me leaping on negativity as a "happy clapper" or a member of the rose tinted specs brigade, but I think the best is yet to come with Benning.   He was a sought after player, and has come to us with a good reputation, albeit, as you say, for a club who haven't exactly been pulling up trees in this league. I'm not sure he's fully fit yet, though I may be wrong.  I also think he is a step up from the players we got rid of in the summer - I'm not part of the brigade think last year's team could "still do a job at this level".  Many of them patently couldn't, which is why the season was such a struggle.

I watched the Crawley game a couple of weeks back and he put himself in some great positions on the overlap, but just wasn't being given the ball. I couldn't understand why - we often took a couple of passes to ship the ball out to him, by which time he was up against two players.  Maybe it's a confidence thing, or maybe the players getting used to that particular system?  Whilst we're all lauding the depth of the squad as being a great thing for maintaining a strong team for the whole game, the rotation of players means that Benning hasn't had much match time, and I don't think that has helped his confidence either. It might that injuries to players or suspensions later this season gives him an extended run in the side, and only then will we see his true quality.

Whether I'm right or wrong, my instinct is to give him the benefit of the doubt and be supportive of him.  We may need him when the chips are down, and suggesting he is national League and just not good enough isn't particularly helpful in my view.  But like I said, I respect your view, and can see why you have come to the conclusion you have.

Simply put Benning hasn’t been as good as Gibbo. No matter how good Benning may have been in the past or how much may be yet to come he just hasn’t affected games as much as Gibbo has at both ends of the pitch. That’s why gibbo has the shirt. Also you can’t deny the energy and drive that he brings to the team over Benning. I’m sure Benning will get his chance again, but from the minute Gibbo came back into the side he’s changed how we play for the better and I think he’s one of the reasons why we improved.

Our form with Gibbo is incredible. I don't think it's a coincidence.

Our good run isn’t solely down to him, but him coming back was just one decision of a few from the manager that improved us after the Rochdale shocker.

Gibbo has being terrific in the main but overall I think the squad has being terrific ,if someone if not quite at it DC hauls them off ,it's great to watch a Vale side who are managed by a man who manages them superbly and see what the supporters see .
Benning will come good he as it in him but for now Gibbons if he adds goals to his excellent all round committed game I feel could in the future get Vale very good money if he continues to improve and with DC at the helm I think he will .

I think he's our most important player. What he offers is irreplaceable in this squad. We have a lot of good players but I think we can get by without them if needs be.

If Gibbo went down, I'd be worried. I love him. He's good at football but its his mentality. Juicy three year contract needed, because smart teams will be lurking.

I think that determination, passion, drive and energy isn’t something that all players have. So that makes him valuable to the side as well as his ability. But no matter what, bad game or good game you still get the same desire from him. I think that’s what sets him apart in my eyes.
