Match Thread: FLT G1 Bolton Wanderers v Port Vale

Play the kids for this one, with a few senior players needing game time. Concentrate on getting out of this division, and avoid injuries to key players. FGR paid a price for their attempts at Brentford by playing a largely full strength team in mid-week.

Hypothetically, can the unwanted three play?  Seeing as we don't play a reserve team I'd view it as an opportunity to give some game time to those coming back from injury/on the periphery.

Probably not a popular opinion, but I kind of enjoy these games. Low pressure, get to see a few different players and if we win bank some cash.

Can we make 11 changes? I wasn't sure if that was allowed in this cup?

Technically you can. The rules are a bit odd nowadays.

They are here -

and it's section 7.4 you need to look at.

So, League clubs need to include four "qualifying" players.  And those are players who:

- Started the previous game

- Will start the next one

- Are among the top ten appearance holders this season

- Have made 40 or more appearances for the club

- Is on loan

So, Vale could swap the whole eleven out as long as they have four "senior" players in their starting eleven.

Yes - we have a priority, this season, to try to get promotion. But we also need to be bringing money into the club -  for the Shanahans, to start to recoup what they had to pay Smurthtwat; for funding the club when we had no income during lockdowns, and to build up a transfer kitty for next season? So the cash for winning is not to be sniffed at. Plus winning is a good habit, and we have fringe players and returning first-teamers who all need minutes.

Just give all the players needing game time a run out.......

.............................................Stone...........................................

Gibbons..................Cass................Johnson.............Benning

Amoo..........................Conlon.........Taylor.....................Politic

.......................................Lloyd............Rodney...........................

Not a bad side that.....Benning is getting there but needs game time and Cass and Johnson know each others game while Gibbons only gets a half.....whatever happened to the versatile Solanke who did the whole of pre-season and looked dead cert to get a contract.....anyway both Amoo and Politic were on fire in their last outing and if Taylor is ready and is possibly our best midfielder then alongside Captain Conlon that is a very strong midfield.....best of all Rodney playing off our new number nine George Lloyd and the both of 'em won't give the defenders a minutes peace.

Forgot about the versatile Mr Hurst and considering Benning is currently a starter in the first team then give Hurst a run out at left back.....Hurst and Politic attacking down the left and Gibbons and Amoo down the right....jobs a good'un.

Politic can’t play mate

Sorry my mistake of course Politic can't play against Bolton so Hurst must get a run out on the left wing still interesting that that is a very strong team and as strong as the current first team which goes to show there is real depth and competition for places throughout the squad.

Perhaps not. I'm expecting Hurst to leave on loan. He needs 1st team football to improve his game and has no chance getting it in this squad.

Can't see Tayloy being anywhere near ready yet, but not a bad side.
