Are you suggesting legalizing and state control?

No you don't have to do any legalizing and state control. Just let people pay a small price at a drug testing senter. Plus stop making criminals out of people who just want to get hi. Pushing people to the edges of society because they get hi is not the way.

It's true that some addicts develop mental illness and some people with mental illness develop addictions but the two aren't synonymous.

I agree that you don't have to have one to have the other, but it is common for those with drug/alcohol issues to have underlying mental health issues, which is why curing the addiction is not enough.

I think going down that road is far better option than our current "War On Drugs" stance which has failed miserably.

Would take a brave politician though.

So it wont happen anytime soon.

I think identfying the primary (whichever one caused the other) ant treating it while giving help with the other is probably a good route to go. Eliminate the cause then deal with the effect.

I've only just seen this thread but I was going to post about Portugal, so I'm glad someone did.

It's very sad that we can't have a debate on this kind of stuff.

This is a brilliant interview with the former Government advisor on drugs (sacked by Brown I believe):
