Proctor looks good but he spends way to much of his time on the pitch not playing in central forward areas… if he focused on being in dangerous areas on the pitch maybe he’d score more….

Because he really, really wants the ball..so has to come stupidly deep to get it when the midfield is struggling to keep hold of it.

Fundamentally the shape isn't working, and players are out of position. We really really miss Conlon getting it down in the middle. Walker and Pett are very good players at L2 level, Garrity has been ok so far but the set up is leaving them bypassed and overrun for the most part. I had awful memories of Aspin/Askeyball last night watching us aimlessly hoof it clear only for it to fall to a line of blue shirts on the halfway line ready to start another attack with us penned in deep in our own half with no interest in getting out.

442/433/4231 it doesn't matter, as long as it isn't Worrall completely nullified at RWB having to cover twice the amount of ground and performing defensive duties he isn't specialised in.

The delicate balance is getting Gibbons back without rushing him because if his hamstring goes again that's it.

Should we accept that his teams start slowly ? What's wrong with starting fast ? Should Clarke accept his teams start slowly ? Time isn't something afforded in the game these days. Fans turn very quickly if things aren't going well especially after all the promise of pre-season and the end of last.

if we weren't patient with John Rudge in the early days then the golden years in the 90's wouldn't have happened. The negativity, along with the rude and dismissive language spouted by some on here, says more about the poster than the players they intend to criticise. Players sometimes have bad games, managers and coaches sometimes get systems wrong but if you are true Vale fans then you wouldn't be calling anyone "useless" or say a certain player will "never make a footballer". I can't believe the lack of support our manager is afforded by some on here, it's almost as if some are willing him to fail. I will always accept justified criticism and this forum is designed for the free flow of opinion. It may help if those dismissive posters could be a little more articulate and add a sentence or two. "Such and such is useless" because.......add some evidence, some constructive observation. Vale will do alright this season, the ingredients are there. We have more strength in depth than last season even though the squad is smaller. Soon we will score and Worrall will have a stunning game and Rodney will put one away like he did at Colchester last season, Covolan will save a penalty and Clarke might win manager of the month, like he should have done last year. What was the name of that Dad's Army character who kept saying "we're all doomed"?

We got to Lorne Street at 215pm and there was only 1 gate open with a queue of about 30 people in it. No programmes on sale inside and the pies had all been sold by half time. People were coming in and sitting anywhere until they were advised they were in season ticket holders seats. Does this mean when you purchase a ticket on the day it doesn't have a designated seat number? Or is it just laziness in some peolpe not looking at the obvious stickers on seats?

We had to get a ticket for someone who hadn't planned on coming when I asked for the seat next to us the bloke said just sit anywhere and printed off a random seat number

That needs addressing. In Lorne street there are row after row of season tickets now and it is simply NOT good enough for people(non season ticket holders) to sit anywhere they like! What is the point of people buying season tickets for seats they desire every game when turnstile attendants give out instructions to "sit anywhere."  Absolute joke Vale. Get this sorted. I'm also sure this must happen in the Railway too?

Forgot about this one. It was well placed into the corner but the last man Tanner was fortunate to get a block on it as it came through the crowd as I don't think the nervous keeper would have got near it. If you watch it back it was a really good training ground manoeuvre that Carlisle got caught out by terribly, lucky boys we didn't capitalise.

We're not playing well, with key players out and others not being utilised in their best positions, and yet we're still creating very good chances and have 2/3 clean sheets. It's not panic stations.

As sure as night follows day there was no way this formation was going to be given time by fans because we like to see wingers getting crosses in. To me that’s the preconception that vale fans have about how we should play football, change isn’t accepted. Maybe wingbacks will work if given time, it certainly makes us more solid, but for it to be effective you need those wingbacks higher up and getting the ball in, forwards who will run themselves into the ground, clever players behind the front 2 who can be creative as well as a defensive midfielder who can plug gaps. I was trawling through Twitter today and came across more local reports on last nights stoke game than ours, but it was interesting to see that the headlines for Stoke were lauding their 3 at the back system. So it can work and I don’t think the level we play at should be a barrier. Even if we stick with this formation and put Gibbo at RWB there when he’s fit, you just know fans will says he isn’t as creative a player as worrall is. So where does worrall fit in to a wingback system? Is the only solution to go to a more traditional 4 at the back to accommodate players?

I was a bit sad and saw the team training a couple of times last week, it was interesting to see that players like gibbo and Jake Taylor were doing the training with the team, but when that finished they got taken away to do a load of extra running with the fitness coach. So they look to be really being out through their paces.

But as I said, what chances did we create for our strikers? The clamour to sign a "proven striker" baffles me. What we need are "proven creators" if anything.

What clear cut chances have we created?

We either hope someone gets on the end of a cross, hope their defender makes a mistake, or hope something drops to us kindly in the box. That's our attacking play.

What have you been watching?  We’ve played 4 games.  The strikers have had chances.  Wilson, Rodney and Proctor have all had chances.  Only one has been taken.

I, on the one hand, fully get and agree with the frustration, but on the other have found myself laughing at people who have very definitely figured it all out with bold, absolutist proclamations.

As said, if we did the same thing at the same stage last season, we'd all have confidently predicted a promotion push as we had 7 points from 9. Look how that finished. You'd all have looked daft.

Carlisle and Tranmere are good sides, and we're still not quite settled and missing our player of the season from last year and captain, with 7/8 new signings starting.

Criticisms of last night are fair but lads on here going for the hot-take Nostradamus stuff need to chill a tad.

Carlisle are not a good side. There's a bold, absolutist proclamation for you.

We huffed and we puffed, we look solid. No one is going to hammer us but we are goal shy. Agree its not all down to the strikers, they need more chances. Alan Shearer in his prime might get 2 chances in a game and would score 1 or 2 goals. A league 2 free transfer striker might need 5/6 chances to do the same.

It therefore defies logic to put Wozza our best creator of chances and the 2nd best in League 2 last season on defensive duty. Our defence looks sound, let Wozza do what he does best. It would appear that is what we need more of.

Spot on.

I agree Moz, thought they were as average as they come.

If that's average we are miles off

Not disputing that early days yet but it's a misconception to say they are decent.

Two good long range strikes from the right back and the 4 on 1 balls up. Other than that they offered very little. Struck me as a team destined for 10th to 16th .

Early to predict stuff like that on one viewing but I didn't rate them at all .

Feel like I could copy and paste my post from after the tranmere game. When that one goal goes in i think we will be fine

One player i have been slightly disappointed in so far not writing him off as only three games but think mel benning has been really poor so far. seems a bit lightweight and not really effected the games in anyway. The only reason why picked him out as there was a lot of hype around him signing. Hopefully he will improve and like i said no way am i writing him off- just an observation from what ive seen so far
