Match Thread: Port Vale v Sheff Wed (friendly)

I thought tonight, in patches, Vale played some lovely stuff. Back 3 were very good, aside from switching off twice, Johnson was excellent.
Midfield 3 could play league two with their eyes shut, Pett is a lovely footballer, always looking to play on the front foot.
If I’m being critical, we look slightly lightweight up top and maybe could do with another forward on loan, however it is a brand new team with a lot of gelling to do.
Get the feeling we maybe a little up and down in the early stages of the season, but keep the faith, I think we’ll come good and have a decent season. Impressed with our recruitment, maybe in certain areas we lack a little strength in depth but lots of positives for me tonight.

It's an absolute no from me for Theo playing another game in a Vale shirt. Wilson is a slight worry for me. I really hope we're not one of those FGR type teams who look great in the middle third but have no edge.

At the moment, I see 10-12 coming from Conlon and Rodney. 7-8 from Woz and Wilson. Maybe 5 from Pett. Not sure that's enough.

I could (and hope to be) wrong about Wilson. Players with his background can suddenly catch fire and we'll have a gem on our hands.

Only vale fans would call for theo to be given another chance after the two worst stints from a striker ive ever seen in my time watching vale

Cheltenham won the title with a top league scorer of 8. Newport finished 5th with a top scorer of 6.

You can go the route of all your goals coming from one player (Cambridge), or you can share them around. Signing the striker is a foolish game as the chances are you're either a) taking a risk or b) overpaying. Most good teams had someone who notched between 15-19, which Rodney could very feasibly do.

Wilson will get goals. He got 10 in 35 at Salford. Maybe a few thought he'd come in and be the fabled '20 goal' man (only one player hit the figure last year) based on his reputation. I imagine the thinking was that he'll offer somewhere around 10 and, if Rodney steps forward as we hope he will, that will be enough in tandem with a good defence + goals from Conlon, Proctor, and whatever other forward we will sign. I think Johnson and Martin will bag a few as they're absolutely humongous.

I can’t see us conceding many goals and I’m not scared of the attacking threats of many teams to challenge us in that department. If Conlon and Worrall get 5/6 each and the strikers don’t completely bomb we’ll have enough from elsewhere to see us up.

but it will be an iron defence that builds the main foundation.

Playing a tinkering game without a real starting 11 against a higher league team after 2/3rds of strenuous pre-season. Lol

I thought we were ok tonight against an organised and compact unit that shut down our passing lanes well. They were probably a bit too canny to get pulled apart. Our press was decent and we try to move the ball quickly. We need a front two to gel quickly.

If I was looking for negatives from the game, I'd expect a higher tempo from us once the competitive fixtures start in earnest.  Service into the front 2 needs to be much better.  We still lack pace, certainly in central midfield.  I feel far more confident with Leon Legge in the side when were defending free kicks / corners. Otherwise plenty of positives.

I don’t know what the plan is with Wilson. I thought he was a target man, with excellent finishing. Instead he looked like he was running all over the place (tracking back yes) like a latter era Pope when we were struggling under Aspin.

I hate to say it but...don’t give Theo a push out of the club just yet!

Load of tosh. Where have you seen / heard that Wilson is a target man 😂 stop judging after a friendly against a side in a higher league. Wilson wouldn’t have been my choice of signing but give the lad a chance, you can’t judge him off a couple of friendlies

Give it a rest about Robinson. He is one of if not the worst striker to play for vale in our recent history. Shouldn’t have re signed the donkey, get him gone.

My views so far, I don’t think we will concede many, I’m not the biggest fan of 352 / 532 and wing backs. I think it’s quite easy to play against and quite often your back 3 can become a back 5. I do find it slightly odd that Clarke criticised askey for a one dimensional squad, yet seems to be doing the same?

Strong in the middle though, think that midfield will be as strong as there is in the league. Still don’t see enough creativity and were certainly a winger & striker short at the minute.

Keeper impressed me tonight, if he plays like that then we will have no issues there. For me overall it was certainly a better showing than against forest. Pett will be out main man, said it a few times and every time I see him it just convinces me even more.

Good run out, can’t wait for the proper stuff to start.

I noticed Baggley in the Sentinel stated Vale will sign another striker in August. Not 'hope to' or 'would like to', sounded pretty definite to me.

Should of been in the building now not August.

Can't comment on the game as unable to attend. The result is irrelevant it's all about fine tuning for the proper stuff.

As for Theo coming back into the fold 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
