Sterling didn’t take a penalty in the last shoot out he was involved in, can’t remember if it was for City or England. I would expect him to miss anyway. Before the shoot out Southgate asked Grealish something and he nodded, I thought he was going to be one of the takers.

I’d expect him to miss as well. Just think the experienced players should be taken them, not fair on players like saka

Afraid to lose rather than wanting to win. That sums Southgate up. simple!

Correct, Italy were there to be beaten last night, an aging defence, England favourite to win with the bookies yet we sat back. Saying that, his tactics worked in the rest of the tournament or at least they didn’t cost us.

These were the remaining players

Stones Shaw Phillips Grealish and Sterling.

Of those Sterling has taken the odd howler for City but is possibly the most senior player left there.

Sancho is a strange one , has he ever taken a penalty in his life ? I assume ( possibly wrongly ) that Haaland takes them for Dortmund.

Henderson scored against Columbia in the shootout win yet was subbed. Admittedly he missed v Austria prior to this tournament.

It should never of come to that anyway. Most people watching that game knew an equaliser was imminent and we did nothing to react to the possibility.

Italy were cynical and I disagreed about the ref , I thought he was poor. Far too lenient. However the ref didn't cost the game, Southgate did.

At least the Jocks and Potato pickers can bask in their glory. Because neither will be in Qatar . McLean and child modelling Italy shirts last night apparently.

We will sadly always be plucky old England.

Maguire in a recent interview , said his biggest regret was sitting back on a 1-0 halftime lead against Croatia in the World Cup semis , instead of going for a second goal . Said they were too scared to concede, rest is history . Deja vu . As good as Italy are , they were there for the taking .

I don't suppose Southgate told them to sit back, it is just what happens sometimes in matches.

My opinion scored a lovely worked goal but created nothing after and then Mancini got his tactics spot on and kept freshening up his team throughout and they passed it well and Englands Lads were chasing the ball too much for my liking and they deservedly equalised .

Then we freshened it up with saka grealish and Henderson on and we did somewhat better in extra time with Phillip's banging one wide and stones so unlucky it didn't go in off his head .

Penalties are usually our undoing and that proved to be the way we lost the game but in my opinion we lost the game after our goal we seemed to lose belief when really you think the goal would have us playing with higher energy of which  it didn't.

That is the one redeeming feature for me. I could have been born Scottish and had to support the worst team in the tournament!

I can’t understand why McLean doesn’t bugger off back to Ireland if he hates us so much - yes I can, all the money he earns in England!

The best team on the night won, no complaints. The racial abuse Saka recieved on twitter was absolutely sickening.

Knew it would happen. Feel sorry for him, shouldn’t have been taking that penalty and the abuse from his so called fans is absolutely disgusting.

We say we have the best fans in the world. They’ve been pretty vile at times this tournament.

Racism, storming Wembley, booing national anthems ect. It’s no wonder we’re hated. Hope they punish all involved.

Totally correct. Everyone watching could see that Italy were odds on to score given the time and space they were getting in midfield yet Southgate did nothing to change it. It was a fundamental mistake setting up the team so defensively with virtually all our creative players on the bench, particularly Grealish who the Italians, in their usual charming manner, singled out for some special treatment when he came on. We had little or no control in the centre of the pitch, no outlet or creativity and, in the end, Southgate's utter negativity reaped its just rewards.

The worst aspect though was his management of the penalty taking, leaving the younger less experienced players to step up while the senior pro's stood and watched. It was so unfair to Saka - the victim of a disgustingly violent foul by Chiellini - a young lad of 19 who will now be remembered as missing with the final kick of the game.

Finally a word for the Italians: a ruthlessly cynical outfit who, as soon as they realised they had a weak ref, exploited it to the full. They may have been the better footballing side on the night but they have simply cemented their unenviable international reputation as the the purveyors of foul play. How they still had 11 men on the pitch at the end is beyond me.
