Agree re Rice, and no way should both be starting together unless you are playing a team whose entire strength lies in midfield, (e.g. Croatia, where it worked well), but calling Phillips a journeyman is a bit weird, given he's young, clearly talented, and only ever played for one club.

The problem is Kane, who even if he was 100% fit instead of looking slow and ponderous would be the wrong fit (now) for this team, since he's started dropping deeper. We need a striker who will stretch/turn the defence to create space for Mount/Foden/Grealish to get on the ball and create, not one who always drops into that space.

Clays, Journeyman to me means average and IMHO that is what Phillips is at International level, I've seen him virtually every time he's played for England. He was decent vs Croatia and played a good ball for the goal but one swallow doesn't make a summer. However, every team needs a runner/competitor in midfield but both Phillips and Rice together do seem to limit the offence/creativity especially when some of the "star" players are out of form.

Yep, Kane also appears to be struggling. When he's playing well and scoring goals he drops deep and can play superb passes, beautifully weighted but he's not even doing that.

I'm not a fan of Southgate but he has to sit down and assess these first two games and decide whether or not to keep playing players out of form or bite the bullet and play the likes of Bellingham, Grealish, Calvert-Lewin etc 'cause the  writings already on the wall.

Neither were pens for me, thought it was the wrong to decision to aware it for Spain and justice done.  This is the thing with VAR for me, when you slow it down like they do, you can see why refs give it but not every contact is a foul.  If you were looking at that at normal speed there is no way the ref makes that decision.  Saying that I think the standard of referring is far better than in the premier league.

Three instances in the tournament of players being trod on in the box.  Two referred to VAR (Spain and Netherlands) and pens given.  One not even referred to VAR.  Consistency would be nice.

Really don’t enjoy watching this Spanish team at all. Just constantly going side to side with almost zero tempo. Great example of how dominating possession is one of the most overrated stats going. They may well still sneak a winner but the likes of Italy, France and Germany will see these off comfortably.

I’ve noticed the refs are letting more fouls go unpunished. By that I mean fouls that never would have been given a few years ago.

I don't understand this Mount and Chilwell business, what were they doing hugging Billy Gilmour and almost celebrating ? In Denis Law's autobiography, Law admitted he couldn't speak for 2 weeks after England won the World Cup in 66 and found it hard when he got back to Old Trafford to talk to Charlton and Stiles.

Different circumstances in a group stage game I realise, but is there that desire to win ?

Those pair should have been throwing their boots around and digging the other members of the team out for that pitiful performance against Scotland, not bloody hugging the opposition and chatting for 25 minutes in the tunnel.

Ok so Mount & Chilwell have got to isolate because they were in close contact with Billy Gilmour, I'm sure when Gilmour left the field he was hugged & congratulated by Steve Clarke..... how come he is not isolating. I dare say there were a few hugs & congratulations in the Scotland dressing room. Not heard Nicola "Krankie" passing judgement either.

I also gather that Michael Gove, on his return from the champions league final, was caught up on track & trace. Now to avoid any isolation as the rest of the country is required to do, he agreed to a daily lateral flow test. Don't the England squad already have daily lateral flow tests & PCR tests.

Is there different interpretations of the rules depending who you are.

Gove got away with not having to isolate because he was participating in a ‘special pilot scheme’

A bit like the Events Research Programme  that allows 60,000 fans for the Wembley final 😷
