Modric is still world-class at 35. He's every bit as good now as he was 5 years ago. Perhaps doesn't quite have the same engine he used to, that's all. Being on the wrong side of 30 means very little for their players because none of them were exactly blessed with pace to begin with to lose it as can sometimes happen with footballers.

They were a fantastic team 3 years ago, now they're just a very good team. Still a great win for England all things considered. Croatia lack a world-class striker but they will still give just about anybody a real game.

Only 3 of the starting 11 were over 30.

Yeah but the one's that are, are Modric. Perisic and Vida, three huge players for them. And that's on the back of losing Mandzukic and Rakitic recently due to age. Regardless, they are still a good and difficult team even if they peaked as a side a few years ago.

Croatia are no way near as good as they were 3 years ago, they certainly miss Rakitic and I’m not sure they really wanted to beat England. Finishing 2nd in the group gives an easier pathway in the knock out stages.

There's no way they went into that game not wanting to win. Momentum means a lot in football and there's nothing like winning game after game.

They weren’t living la Vida Luka yesterday.

WEMBLEY TICKETS....
England v Scotland
Fri 18th June 2021
KO 2000hrs

One of mates has two spare tickets in a corporate box for the England v Scotland game. He paid £300 each, but he didn't realise when he bought them that it was going to be the same day as his Covid 19 postponed wedding. If you are interested, he is looking for someone to take his place.

It's at Bolton Registry Office, at 2.30pm. The bride's name is Moira, she's 5'4", about 8 stone, quite pretty, has her own income and is a really good cook.

England did well yesterday, I've seen a lot of critical comments about the performance but I thought we got it spot on.

We had spells of high pressing but the heat wasn't going to allow us to do that all game so had the spells, then sat in and passed it around, we were patient and took the chance when it came, Croatia didn't lay a glove and they generally do well in tournaments and do have a decent side still, their midfield had Modric and a title winner at Inter in Brozovic.

Pretty much puts us through as lets be honest 3 points is enough with this 4 best 3rd placed teams going through so should take pressure off and hopefully we can take apart Scotland and build momentum.

Phillips was outstanding.

England did just enough, they did what they had to do and got the win. However with a better manager and tactics they could do much better.

Walker was dire, Trippier doesn't look comfortable and is only half the player on the left hand side. The whole outlook and play of the midfield and forwards just seems too defensive, predictable, lacks urgency  and leads to much square and back passing. Without Bellingham there's no dictator of play in the midfield and with no Grealish there's no one to play the short passes and open up defenses.

I just see deja vu all over again, as soon as we meet a good team England will be found out. I'd rather England try to be more enterprising and pick the players in form and go for it rather the same old Southgate tactics.

Phillips? Phillips and mount made countless forward runs. As did Sterling and foden. Thought trippier was solid at left back as well

Phillips was excellent but looked shattered in the last quarter of an hour and should have been subbed. Mount was the only one to have a quieter game than Kane. Sterling always makes great runs and is second to none off the ball, it’s his final pass or finish that lets him down, Foden had a good first half but didn’t do much in the second. Trippier despite having a decent game was our obvious weak link in defence and will be found out if we continue with him at left back.

Aren't the world Cup finalists a good team? They were when they beat us but not when we beat them? Maybe we just made them look poor. It was too hot (28c) to press all game and we slowed it down when we needed a rest. Croatia never looked like scoring and we could have had 2 or 3 more on another day. Its the first time we have won an opening game at the euros you would have thought people might be a bit more positive. No pleasing some.
