England Test squad announced - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/57156635

I'm pleased to see James Bracey in there. I mentioned him in the previous cricket thread and (thanks to the free streams on YouTube) I've seen a fair bit of him this county season. I guess it remains to be seen if there are any flaws which will be found out by world-class bowlers, but to my very amateur eyes, he looks well organised and composed at the crease.

It looks like there will be some rotation in the bowling ranks - it will be nice to see Olly Stone again, I thought he looked decent against India.

Just away from the football, that's a magnificent coiffure effort by current NZ batsman Colin de Grandhomme.

I hope some of the Vale players take note for their new season haircuts...👩‍🦱

Best mullett I've seen in a long time. Didn't do his batting much good this morning though!

Great to see some Test Match cricket at last--one of the later International starts to a new cricket season, but nevertheless very welcome.  Let's hope the sun keeps shining for the next few weeks! N. Zealand will be a tough test and the 2 game mini-series is a good warm-up to the main event against India later in the summer.  Although I guess New Zealand may well contest that comment as they're only warming up against England to give them match practice before the world Test final against India!

Love playing NZ. Tests usually played in the right spirit and can be a pretty close series.

They also bring my favourite test summariser, Jeremy Coney along to TMS.

Yep, he's great to listen to.

How good must it feel to score 200 on test debut at Lords!

It must be hard to top that.. And he can also say it was against Anderson and Broad who together have amassed over 1,000 test wickets.

Who was the last England batsman to score 200 at Lords?

Looks a very good player Conway. Apparently he’s been knocking on the door scoring a heap of runs for years.

NZ are a long way ahead of us in test cricket, I know we have our middle order missing for this one and a couple of others but our batting line up is pretty poor for international standard. I’ve cut sibley a lot of slack (even on here) but I think his time is up. He seems to be getting progressively worse. 20 tests now and averaging under 30 just isn’t good enough. Players before him have had better averages in fewer games and been dropped. Time to bring hameed back into the side.

Spot on with both those comments--here's to some cricket today and tomorrow or we could be heading for what has become a rarity these days..........a drawn Test Match!

Personally think we should be playing 5 match series against NZ they’re a quality side and like you I love it when we play them. Great side

They always seem to be criminally underrated. They only lost the WC final due to luck, really, they could be World Test champions and for a smallish population they have some fantastic players.

Spot on. They’re very strong in each format as well, think they are at their peak currently as their an experienced side, probably where we were a few years ago. Still wouldn’t be surprised if they beat us here even with that day rained off

Southee and jamieson are very good bowlers so they will cause problems on any surface. Apart from root though none of the others have a decent test average or a proven record in test cricket. Burns is in decent form and batted well here but I dont think he is good enough either. They keep saying pope is going be this really good upcoming youngsters but he doesn't make any runs and Crawley averages about 26 but if you take his double hundred he scored last year out then he is probably averaging something like 15. Robinson and Wood are decent bowlers and I'd like see stone given a chance perhaps rest broad who was wicketless in the first innings.

I'm not too sure about the likes of Sibley, Crawley and Burns (even after his ton) but I do think Pope is quality. Yes, he keeps getting out for not very much but I think consistency will come with him. It's difficult to really convince any doubters because he isn't getting many runs right now, but my gut instinct is that I think in years to come he'll be an established International player.

I also like Bracey (I've watched him a lot this season) and I think he has a lot to offer. He may or may not be International class but he deserves a chance to see if he is. However, I think he's been dealt an awful hand. Bracey has played well at number three all this season. But then he's asked to move to number seven which I think is a bit like the England football team saying to a winger - you're making your International debut and we're going to play you as a full-back. It's hard enough coping with the step up in class without having to make your International debut in an alien position in the batting line-up.
