Agreed. We gave him a fixed term deal and he's entitled to be paid for another 11 months because of it. That said, I think he's more likely to wait for January when some desperate team at the bottom of L2 or VNL pays silly money in wages for a perceived goalscorer to keep them up.

He's not a "perceived" goalscorer though.  Whatever we may think about Robinson, those are actual goals on his record.

One thing that has shocked me is that we aren't going for a back up for Walker. It was one of the things DC specifically complained about last year, the lack of back up for Joyce.

We are currently in the exact same position.

Pett played the exact same role at Lincoln; spoiler, shielder, call it what you want. My Imps mate said he was outstanding in said role the year they walked the league.

With Walker he can move forward but should Walker get injured, Pett will sit back, Garrity will go into the more box-to-box position. They did look at Solanke and I think he's playing in the reserve friendly on the 24th.

As an aside, I've been so impressed with Walker so far. A ludicrous range of passing.

His all time record league season is 13 in 37, in 09-10. He's reached double figures in the league once since 2012, and he scraped through with 11. His career record is 1 in 4.

This concept that Theo is this good striker we've somehow failed to use properly is a fallacy. He is a 1 in 4 striker who regularly fails to get 10 goals a season and is well into his thirties. If someone is silly enough to take him off our hands then it'll be party time.

I have no issue with his attitude as he grafted in the good run last season, dedicated a goal to Lee Collins, and has taken his exile with good humour, but he's not a professional striker anymore. I wish him the best but not at Port Vale.

He's as much of a goalscorer as Big Reg. They both scored 4 goals last time they were in League 1.

I am not saying for one minute that Theo is the answer, and I will be happy to see him leave.

To dismiss his career as poor when he has already scored in excess of 100 league goals is however unjust.  He has just been largely poor for us.

He is still just 32, has 103 league goals in 264 starts (plus 192 as sub).  He has one premier league appearance, approaching 150 of these at championship or Scottish Prem level,  and the majority of the others have been in League 1.  The higher up you play the better the defenders, and therefore goals more difficult to come by. Given the number of sub appearances I would envisage he has rarely been the No1 striker, so rarely been in double figures is hardly unsurprising.

Tom Pope is soon to be 36, has 127 league goals in 378 starts and 110 sub appearances, and was first choice for the vast majority of his career (certainly his 9 years with us and deservedly so), with the vast majority of these appearances in League 2.

As I said I have no desire to see Theo in a Vale shirt again, but he did show he can be useful in the good run last year, and was also effective for Swindon and Colchester in this league in the two previous seasons (7 in 16 and 12 in 28).

A striker at just 32 with in excess of 100 league goals will hopefully still attract some interest, the sooner the better!

Agree 100% on Walker. A fantastic addition so far

I thought Garritty was totally anonymous yesterday in the first half until I noticed that he was constantly looking around to see where Spearing was. If his role was actually to ensure that Spearing did not run the game then he achieved it very well.

I too like the look of our new recruits. They just need to gel, gain a little confidence together which hopefully will allow them to play with a bit more freedom and this could be a very interesting season.

And Wilson's first touch is a level way above League 2. The powers that be just need to work out how to involve him more but the pedigree shines through.

If/when we sign a left winger, how do we see this working?

In a 532, will they start? If they do start, will they have enough of an attacking impact on the game? (A bit Worrall’s dilemma at RWB)

Will they be an impact player? Like Amoo?

Obviously certain formations might see the winger start AND have more of an impact: 442, 433 etc. But will we start with a formation that suits/gets the best out of the new winger (any winger) very often?

I appreciate that we need the flexibility within the squad to play different formations (a bit like yesterday) but we’ve got to allow some these more attacking players to play in a system that allows them to flourish. Not saying we won’t BUT just not sure how I see things going?
