So we have gone from a defence which towards the end of last season went on an unbeaten run of 8 games to one which needs to improve defending from set pieces and haven't played together before. I am not sure that is progress. Especially since they haven't really had time to decide if any of them fancy each others wives or don't agree with their choice of car or music.

It has been 1 friendly game where he said we need to defend better on set plays. It’s getting embarrassing now.

What evidence do you base this '1-0, 0-1, very poor upfront so far' view Dave? Pre-season?

We scored 4 less goals than the team who won the title, and we've released 4 strikers who scored 9 league goals combined. We're certainly no worse, as Wilson got 7 goals himself, mostly from the wing.

Meanwhile, the defence had the 2nd worst record in the league when DC arrived, and even with 6 clean sheets in 9 games, finished with a bottom half record. That was the reason we were losing games (Tranmere, Walsall, Orient), and not our inability to score, and that was the reason we finished 13th and not top 7, as we certainly scored as many goals as the teams who finished there.

Yep, pre-season on lack of creating chances. Sheffield could have played with no keeper the other night.

If you don’t put 20p in the jukebox, you don’t get a song. A useful lesson If you don’t like the music on offer.

Ignore list. Absolutely any response you give is a win for him.

He’s not even trying hard anymore… such obvious trolling and people fall for it every time… he will be at home laughing his socks off.

I want to agree but we finished 8th and 13th in the last two seasons. We had two very poor seasons in League 2 but prior to that were in League 1.

We've spent 2 of the last 12 seasons below 13th in League 2, so anything below 12th is very disappointing in my view. Mid-table would still be in the bottom 3 of the last 12 years.

Carol has invested a whole load of money and trust in the past 2.5 years and I think she'll be disappointed with anything below a real, serious playoff push which may fall a tad short.

I get people are worried about squad turnover but there's no evidence it inhibits teams at this level. Mansfield are celebrating decade-high season ticket sales of 2,439 and we regularly get 1,500 more than that at our lowest. Our aspirations should be promotion.

Great analysis Joe.

You are correct. We're always great.  I hadn't realised just how great we always are.  Luckily, I have you to remind me that we are right to expect promotion every year.

Obvious trolling? I am just not impressed with"the manager" and his recruitment strategy. I think time will show that his appointment was a mistake.

DC has already had more success than any of the last 5 or 6 managers by actually making the fans believe, bringing in faces people know and having a professional outlook. What does that say for the other managers if that’s all it takes to overtake them? I have never heard of a manager taking a team getting spanked game in game out, falling down the league and leading that same group of players to win 8 on the bounce. That is probably something for folk lore straight away. My genuine only concern for the new season is DC has his head turned by the big bucks, as he seems very ambitious.

We should get atleast 5 goals from Jones launching the ball and our fleet of man giants bundling the ball home.

Also we'll never know the indirect benefit of having a long throw specialist in terms of goals but it helps drag us much higher up the pitch if we get a throw anywhere near the final third. Think this would be the equivalent of nicking a free kick in those inevitable patterns of play where we are soaking up pressure and sitting deep.

Also might make teams play safer choices when playing out from the back to avoid giving away needless throw-ins. So having a long flat and fast throw in our locker helps us offensively and defensively.

It's a threat we didnt have last year so be interesting to see how it pans out.

We had Leon doing it last season but you’d want him to be on the receiving end rather than taking the throw.  Jones may have a better throw than Legge from what we’ve seen.

To be honest I thought the long throw from Legge was bloody awful.

I've no idea what it was meant to be, I'm probably wrong but don't recall one chance or moment of panic resulting from that damp squib

I agree. Legge’s throws were more loopy than long whereas Jones’ seem quite flat almost like a cross

I think Legge could get the distance but the ball was looped in rather than thrown flat, so not so effective.  Legge not being on the receiving end of the throw effectively took one of our biggest heading threats out of the equation.

This is why I’ve put him on the ignore list. I only see his posts when someone quotes them. He’s like a Poundland version of REP or Erniemossrules.

Me too. I wish there was a feature to ignore everything he has to say even when quoted. I've never even seen him make one sensible post yet.

The guy is an absolute crackpot.
