But DC isn't happy with the defence according to his recent Sentinel article.

Twisted his words a bit there. He wasn’t happy with the defending on the set plays for their goals and said that they need to work on that area of the game. There’s a big difference between his actual comments and you throwing in one liners every now and again to stir the <ovf censored> up.

People seem to be worried about being 'light up top' and lacking goals.

I don't think we're any worse than last year, where we scored 4 less than the Champions, 2 less than third, the same number as fifth, two less than sixth, two more than 7th, and four more than 8th. Goals weren't the issue.

The issue was the, I believe, 2nd worst defence in the league when DC arrived. Despite the excellent improvement, we still conceded more than every team inside the top 10. We had, in my view, a good shot-stopping keeper who cost us by not leaving his line, centre halves who could not handle the space in a back 4, diabolically poor fullbacks, and a grafting but declining DM. The problem was the defence.

We have, in my view, upgraded all of those weak areas, and have a far more sturdy structure to support this.

Goals were never the issue folks. The defence was, and shockingly, that's been the focus of the DoF and Manager.

Very poor upfront so far Joe. We are are 1-0, 0-1 team presently.

Maybe we need more defenders then

I think defending rather than purely the defence was a big issue last season.  The whole team could be deemed culpable in that regard.  Also, numerous games where we threw away a lead were often down to individual errors, a few more than would be normal for this level.

I'd still argue we need a few more goals, bearing in mind we scored 11 in just two games, v Bolton and Southend.  A quick check showed we failed to score in 17 games, around 10 more than Cheltenham, 6 more than Cambridge, 8 more than Bolton.

What evidence do you base this '1-0, 0-1, very poor upfront so far' view Dave? Pre-season?

We scored 4 less goals than the team who won the title, and we've released 4 strikers who scored 9 league goals combined. We're certainly no worse, as Wilson got 7 goals himself, mostly from the wing.

Meanwhile, the defence had the 2nd worst record in the league when DC arrived, and even with 6 clean sheets in 9 games, finished with a bottom half record. That was the reason we were losing games (Tranmere, Walsall, Orient), and not our inability to score, and that was the reason we finished 13th and not top 7, as we certainly scored as many goals as the teams who finished there.

Don't disagree more goals are needed, just disagree that we're a very poor side going forward, when we weren't very poor last season and haven't lost anything of any worth in that department.

Defensively we'll, based on the 6 clean sheets in 9 with a 352 and hopefully improved personnel, be better this year, and that's the main reason we were awful last year.

I don't think anyone is saying we were "very poor" going forward last term and I think the comments are aimed at the current squad, still a bit shy of goals looking at the players.  Obviously, DC is well aware of this, hence the plan to add a striker and left winger to the ranks.

Hopefully Rod hits 20, Wilson 18, Conlon 10, Covolan 2 then spread a dozen or more goals about the rest, add your clean sheets and we'll be in a very good place. 👍

The defence wasn't good enough so we have carefully recruited players to improve it and spent preseason coaching them but they are still not good enough according to the man who instigated the changes.

All he has said is they need to get used to each other and improve defending set pieces which is correct

So we have gone from a defence which towards the end of last season went on an unbeaten run of 8 games to one which needs to improve defending from set pieces and haven't played together before. I am not sure that is progress. Especially since they haven't really had time to decide if any of them fancy each others wives or don't agree with their choice of car or music.

We should get atleast 5 goals from Jones launching the ball and our fleet of man giants bundling the ball home.

Also we'll never know the indirect benefit of having a long throw specialist in terms of goals but it helps drag us much higher up the pitch if we get a throw anywhere near the final third. Think this would be the equivalent of nicking a free kick in those inevitable patterns of play where we are soaking up pressure and sitting deep.

Also might make teams play safer choices when playing out from the back to avoid giving away needless throw-ins. So having a long flat and fast throw in our locker helps us offensively and defensively.

It's a threat we didnt have last year so be interesting to see how it pans out.

For me, I do feel (like most) that we need another ‘proven’ striker. A striker to bring goals as well as having enough strikers in the squad to cover injuries.

However, I think it’s more about how we create opportunities for our strikers and give them an opportunity to score. Like most ‘decent’ strikers, create enough chances and they will score.

I’m sure DC will be looking at every opportunity to get the strikers involved: crosses from out wide, play through the middle(which is something we are better at with current midfield), throw ins, corners etc.

Also, of course, other players will chip in with goals.

But if we can get the strikers firing, by creating opportunities, that could be the difference between promotion or not!

Didn’t defend set plays well in one game and your making sweeping statements that we haven’t even improved the defence. I know your probably trolling but you must have a screw lose if you think players like benning aren’t an improvement over Fitzpatrick ect.
