I don’t think it vindicates his decision because other league 2 clubs haven’t picked them all up. If Zak mills is the exception in getting a deal in league 2 that tells you that something isn’t right. Hasnt McKirdy got a deal at Swindon too? I think it shows the amount of players out of contract mean it’s a buyers market and they have the pick, the clubs are holding the cards at the moment with salaries because of the state of the market and also there’s a lot of money sloshing around in the conference too where clubs aren’t paying far off what we were are.

The amount of money sloshing around in the National is mental. Even the managers are complaining:

Thank goodness DC kept us up because getting out would be a nightmare with all those newly rich owners competing for a place in the EFL.

Yeah.

Maybe DC sees Jones as more of a CB than a backup to Benning?

I think on both wings we've got a defensive FB who can cover CB on their side (Cass, Jones), and an attacking FB (Gibbo, Benning), so Amos would defo be the back-up to Benning. Perhaps DC sees Worrall as better cover for Gibbo at RWB than Hurst is for Benning at LWB, so Amos would fill that gap, or perhaps Amos is seen as a possible insurance policy with half an eye on Benning only having a one-year deal? Or possibly a bit of both.

This is interesting.

After the season ended myself and another nerd went through all the retained lists for each team in the bottom two tiers, compiled it on a spreadsheet, and wrote a little note next to players who had provoked a strong reaction (positive or negative) by being released.

This is what I wrote, weeks ago, for Amos:

I remember Donny fans incredulous he hadn't been given more time, such was his potential.

Edit: my OVF post from the time

But what do fans know? I believe some people on here thought Tom Pope was worth another contract...

Usually you can get a general idea about a player from fans. Sometimes they get it wrong, but football fans generally know a good player when they see one.

If fans from a club in the league above were virtually united in saying that releasing him was a poor move, I would guess Amos has a degree of talent. Definitely worth a look at.

Without really knowing anything about him, based on Doncaster’s fans reaction and where he would fit into the team at left back/left wing back (and as a possible replacement for Benning if he doesn’t stay) he seems like a potentially good signing, if we sign him, of course. A young player with potential and probably decent for League 2 right now.

We seem, on paper, a solid side, good in defence, better in midfield, a younger squad and versatile.

Just still feel that we need more potent ‘fire power’ upfront. Got to get goals to be in or around the play offs. Still time I know. Just getting impatient.

That is generally correct, however I would question fans ability to make a decision like that when they have only seen the player a handful of times (probably mostly from the bench) spread out over a 5 year period. Lots of our fans were similar when we let Dan Turner/James Lawrie go, who both played more for us than he has for Doncaster.

Of course, it's not an exact science. Just hopefully not a complete farmer.
