Marty Lund leaving Rochdale according to Sky Sports.  Decent goal scoring record

Was just about to post that, he's a midfielder, cant see us going for another centre mid, think we have other priority positions, but a local lad with an eye for a goal from midfield, would be a good signing at this level.

Good suggestion , no need though as we know the answer

Personally I’m pleased with our signings to date, certainly going be a bigger side this season

We’ve certainly lacked some height and physicality in the side for a few seasons now. Signings don’t seem to be too bad upto now. Although I’m really hoping there’s 3/4 good quality players still to come in and this will make us stronger than last season if we can do that. Keeping Wilson fit and him scoring goals could be crucial this season. It’s about time he settled at a club and started to show his ability.

Not at all. Just based on observation. Would you want to work for a manager who came in and said "everyone has a clean slate" to get you to perform and then releases you after you have saved his job for him by avoiding relegation?

So are you saying what many people believed,  in that these same players who had had spiraled us in to the most perilous of situations by not performing for the previous management were now willing to put in performances that would see them winning 8 out of 9 games, before taking their foot of the gas again, when comfortably safe from relegation?  Would it have been pragmatic to then say that we go with all the same players again for yet another unpredictable season of proven inconsistency, or do what he is in the process of doing by revamping the majority of the squad in a way that he sees fit?  Only then can he be answerable on his man management and capability of the team, which in itself will take a good couple of years to properly shape.

You've stated Clarke "had to get the players to perform". These are professional footballers. They shouldn't need external motivation. They should be willing to run through brick walls for the PRIVILEGE to play for a professional football club.

Does that not say everything about the character of these dossers that he rightly released? That they can win 3 in 25, then 9 in 9 (or whatever it was) all of a sudden.

And to say "they saved his job" is utter lunacy from you (not for the first time). What about putting a shift in to save THEIR OWN JOBS? If they had bothered to put the same effort in during the losing run as they did in the winning run then they might still be Football League players.

Nothing to do with the unprecedented world situation I guess. But I see you are sure that we will struggle next season, let's hope we avoid relegation...

Have to admit that I don't see the recruitment we've done so far as decent. Far from it, on paper anyway. Looking at the player stats it would appear the only matrix criteria has been to be above six foot tall. None of our signings have averaged over 20-30 games a season throughout their careers so far (the exact opposite DC said he was looking for). Everyone seems pleased with the James Wilson signing but he has consistently failed to live up to expectations so far: over his seven year senior career he's averaged 13 games a season with an average of 2.4 goals a season (yes, not a typo, 2.4). If the player who was once thought was in there is still in there then were really going to have to show him the love and hopefully he will finally come good. At the moment I think we are looking at a very transitional season at best unless better signings come along in the next couple of weeks, not the play-offs/promotion season many Vale fans are expecting. But as you all know Vale fans can be very impatient and DC's honeymoon period could quickly come to an end. Lets be honest, before the winning streak towards the end of last season, had supporters been in attendance they'd have been calling for his head (based on results, and forgetting the improved performances). Am hoping that DC knows something about these signings that their stats have obscured.

Another criteria might be to sign players who are on an upward trajectory in their careers. Players who have more desire, fight and a hunger to win? Also, who are younger and fitter and physically strong. Looking at last season it didn’t seem to take a lot to get into a play off position. Let’s face it - we weren’t that far away after losing god knows how many.

Can't really argue that Wilson's career is on the upward trajectory. I'd say the key attributes in the matrix are:

- Height (six foot minimum)

- Attitude (can't say I know them personally but they seem nice chaps and say they're 'hungry')

- Good on the ball

- Good energy / stamina

- Age (going for 25ish, with the odd 30 year old for experience)

Suggests to me that Clarke wants to players who can press, keep possession, or do whatever he/the match demands, all whilst being strong, fit and athletic so they can't be bullied physically or run out of energy.

Wow! You manage to be a top hat about everything, don't you? The players let themselves down in the last couple of games when...far from avoiding relegation, with an extra win or two earlier in the season...when the players also let themselves down...we could have made the playoffs.
