I think after that Covid-hit season, we need to be super careful with budgets and spending. I think it's all too easy to say to someone else that they just need to spend more of their money.

I think there's still a lot of clubs just about treading water after Covid and for a club which has already had two administrations in living memory I wouldn't want it to be a hat-trick!

Yes, it's frustrating we can't go out there and splurge in the hope of propelling us back into the promotion picture but this is a long-term project and I'd rather take sensible, long-term progression over gambling on going up this season. A gamble is exactly that - what if it failed and we didn't get promotion?

The club is run by well-meaning, fantastic owners with sensible, long-term plans and there's still more to come in terms of developing the academy etc. I am sure that success will follow because the right structure is now in place but we may just need to be patient, keep balancing the books and not do anything silly. Darrell Clarke's has completely revamped the playing side of things - but it took Sir Alex Ferguson three years to deliver success at Old Trafford (or closer to home, it took Rudgie two and half seasons) and Clarke's only just over a year into the job.

Spot on that, what is the obsession with instant success?, I’m more concerned with progress on and off the pitch as they say “ Rome wasn’t built in a day “. The club is clearly moving forward and at a steady rate which can be seen especially when you compare it to the car crash of the Turdthwaite years.

should we get promoted I personally think it would be a season too soon and would lead to another large turn over of players as we search for proven league one players in order to stabilise in league 1.

However I also have the habit of talking out of my a arse, come on Vale let’s get it done

Instead of Signing A £1850 and Signing B £1100, have Signing A £2000 and Signing B £1050. Same expenditure, Carol's pennies untouched.

Player B / C / D / and F go to their agent who knows that Signing A is on £2,000 and demand to be on the same at the end of the year... We want to keep them so have to give in.

Now we only have £450 for signing B and oh great Zach MIlls is back as right back. Brill.

It’s just an overhaul or the players most would want to be overhauled, or at least wouldn’t care if they were. It’s barely touched the first 11 but for adding competition and potential, in exchange for used subs, unused subs and below. The only ones people could possibly lament are Rodney as Politic. Rodney doesn’t fit the system and wasn’t good enough to seriously challenge. Politic also didn’t fit the system and barely played as a result; when he did he was out of position. Cass doesn’t count because if he’d been injured 1st Feb onwards he’d not be playing but we’d have no replacement. The players brought in have good pedigree, have already started needing in well and fill much needed gaps that those who have left were never going to. It’s a lot of overhaul, but only out of choice, to get better and have more players in more positions we actually use. It all makes sense and has given me real encouragement for the rest of the season. If we don’t make it this season, the squad is better primed for next season already. Imagine that squad all fit and raring to go, they’ll be quality that doesn’t make the match day squad. This season, next season and every transfer window to come under DC and DF I’m sure we’ll get better, as that’s the pattern so far.

Best post I’ve seen on here for a while!

Agree with this, we are building some fine foundations.

CONTROVERSIAL VIEW WARNING!!

I don't agree with all of talk about being worried if we are still in this division next season becuase big spenders Wrexham and Stockport might come into the division.. Bring them and their expensive misfits on!!! It could be a great season next season with a fine promotion battle including a couple of exciting clashes with some old foes, Crwho, Stockport and Wrexham.. What a vintage promotion season that would be!

I still want promotion this season, but next season will be good too... Don't dispair.

Equally spot on.

Compare now with 12 months ago.

The progress is incredible.

I think our window being a risk depends on where we’re hoping to finish. The risk for me (if we’re wanting to challenge promotion) is the lack of a proven forward signed. Losing politic, Rodney (highly rated by some within the club) and even Lloyd and replacing them with unproven players with very little game time is a risk. Rodney got double figures last season, Politic proven at this level and Lloyd promoted for the league last year. For players who have barely played.

Players were / are still out there. I mentioned baldock yesterday, league 2 sides are after him and he is proven at a higher level. labala for Northampton is a good signing and wouldn’t have broken the bank. Defensive signings and Midfield I think have been very good, Hall, Hussey and Charsely are good signings. Hall looks a fantastic signing to be fair. I think we’re pinning our hopes on Wilson and Proctor staying fit, if they’re not fit I can’t see us challenging as we’re definitely light up top.

How do you know League 2 clubs are after Baldock?

Problem is that the next games are a tough run but if we don’t pick up points from them we will be too far behind

We all know we need the points, what I’m talking about is fans forming instant opinions with regards to new players.  Lots of new faces to bed in just as we come up against some of the better, more settled sides.
