7 in 24 isn't too bad last season?

Only 25 years old.

A season or two ago I'd have been interested, but I'd like to think we can get better with the current set up.

He's been on a downwards spiral for 7 years. I'd imagine he still thinks he is worth a high salary.  If he ever lives up to his early potential someone will get a great player. Can't see us being interested at his likely wage expectations.  In some ways we would be a good fit for him as he has pace to burn and really needs to play regular games on a bigger pitch. In terms of potential he's possibly the best in this league. Why he has struggled to kick on is a bit of a mystery.

Based on the time that he threw up on the pitch on a televised early Saturday game, after being out the night before I’d suggest that attitude and application might be issues. That’s Biddulph lads for you…

Signing players released from clubs in similar circumstances to Port Vale isn't going to improve Port Vale unless there is something in them that can be got out which will add value. I would have a model of what a 2nd division title winning side looks like. Just go on the websites and grab the history. Then try to build it.

I guess its necessary to decide the style of football that's going to be played. With hindsight Rob Page got a lot of stick for his approach, but its likely he was actually getting the best out of the group of players he had. However, I guess I'm up for some 5-4 games in 2021/22; provided we win about 2/3 of them and don't draw much (except when we score in added time to avoid losing).

I'm in favour of players who have demonstrated they want to come up rather than players who are going down and need to stop the slide. There is usually a reason for the slide. An extraordinary example of what I mean is Jamie Vardy. On a more modest level Oyeleke is an example, but somehow the injuries turned out to be a disaster.

Is there a Post office local to Vale where he can draw his pension ?

Darren, I agree age isn’t on his side but could still bang them in at L2 level. I’d imagine that he’ll go L1 and his wages would be off putting, but could be the new Ron Futcher, who knows.

I think that's the way it will be - players who can potentially be developed further not those at the end of their career. We've got one old 'un in Leon Legge (who I think will be as valuable for his presence and example in training as on the pitch) and arguably we could add another veteran or two. However, with squad limits, I think we'll be looking at relatively proven players in their mid 20s plus one or two youngsters who we can loan out and see if we can develop into first-team players in the future (in other words one or two Alex Hursts, who did exactly that under Askey).
