Scott Brown

Was best keeper in the league last season.
It has always fascinated me how fans are perfectly happy to allow underperforming players to trade on past glories, yet no manager gets the same leeway. JA worked wonders with this squad last season, yet he's gone. In the same circumstances, fans are defending Brown and other players

I also don't know how true that is (that Brown has been the best keeper in the league).

I've seen 8-10 clubs claim their keeper is the best in the league.

Has anyone seen enough of the other keepers to comment?

He was undoubtedly good but let's not throw around absolutist statements which are heavily influenced by bias, as we see him every week.

He was good last year and has, overall, been average this year (with fluctuations in form).

The decision will be for Flitcroft to judge what % of a budget he is willing to allocate to a non-elite goalkeeper for this level. He could be serviceable but his wages need to reflect that.

I wouldn't be able to tell you with any great confidence who the best keeper in the league is.  I liked the Oldham keeper and I also thought Morris at Crawley had always been very consistently steady.  And then look what he did last week.

I think Brown has been very good in the three seasons he's played for us.  Before this season I couldn't bring up a particular howler, possibly the first equaliser at walsall last season where he palmed it back to penalty spot.

I agree that this season he's made some errors.  I'd argue though, that it's still pretty much a handful.  Also, how many have genuinely cost the game?  Cheltenham was awful, sat us up for a bad afternoon that did.

I'm not necessarily saying it's not time for a new keeper by the way.  It may be the way we want to go.  May also be the way Brown wants to go.

I just don't think it's fair to say he's not delivered.  Barring a handful of mistakes this season he's done very well for us.

Without Brown, we'd have drawn against Colchester. He's made big save in the big moments, ever since joining. He's not perfect, but we're lucky to have him at this level. Easy decision to give him a deal. If Visser is fit, he'd be my back up next season. I've liked the look of him.

Wouldn’t another keeper have made that save?

Maybe, but you can say that about any achievement by any player. Brown did make the save. That's the only thing that isn't hypothetical..

Visser has looked good in some games, poor in others (Sunderland). It’s impossible to make a proper judgement from the Pizza Cup but I really think we need a keeper to at least challenge for the #1 spot. Not sure Visser is that man.

I think it’s another example of Vale fans being unable to let go.

Brown been excellent and poor, saved us points and cost us points, but he’s old and probably expensive.

Thanks for your service Browny, you have overall been a really good player for Vale in my opinion, but we need better players to be promoted and that is a ruthless business.

and don’t just hand out coaching roles to old players who can’t play anymore, that’s not a given alternative offer.

Unable to let go or loyal to an excellent goalkeeper? GK is the most important position on the pitch and isn't the place to penny-pinch. Today was another example of the difference he makes. A couple of bad months doesn't make a bad player (or manager).

Because you have to allocate your wages by their impact. Brown has fallen short.

He's not the only one though is he?  I think that we need to give him a chance. The other players have improved under Clarke,  Brown could very well do the same.
