God help him if he came here. 1 game without scoring: 'We're going to achieve nothing with non league signings', 'he's crap', 'we should have kept Guthrie', 'we need Pope'.....

I see that striker Kabongo Tshimanga at Boreham Wood is being watched by a few league clubs including Oxford, would be available on a free at the end of July so i guess he will get a league club

For me, this is exactly the type of signing we should be making a priority. Young, clearly has talent, and keen to move up the pyramid.

I wouldn't mind him as one of our new strikers.

I went through a phase of watching non-league games on BT Sport recently in preparation for us being there next season!

One thing about Tshimanga is he's an absolute workhorse. Chases everything. Decent goal record too and a good age.

He has played at Vale Park so may be tempted.

I like Legge. He's a model pro and you can tell he's a winner who cares about the club.

The problem was that Askey decided he was again going to rely on him as a 1st choice 46+ games a season CB. At his age that's madness. He would have been fine this season if we'd signed a proper 1st team CB then rotated Legge in and out to look after his fitness levels/condition.

Look at Cambridge with Wes Hoolahan. He's a bit older at 38, but he doesn't play any Tuesday games so that his body can recover, and he can be 100% on Saturdays.

We don't know for sure what caused his lack of form? We don't know for sure whether he had a problem with his contract? We don't know how badly his overall health was affected by his epilepsy; nor - thanks to the incompetence of the management - do we know for sure whether he has been affected by Covid at any time? So, let's stop speculating on what his problem was, and look at how he has come back from whatever it was? Personally, I think he has almost been back to how he was last season. So, if we manage him properly - as we ought to be doing with Manny and Monty - he could well be useful in between 2 younger CH, whilst giving them the benefit of his experience on the pitch. i know many on here seem to be pushing for a much younger squad, which I mostly agree with  - but there's always room for a couple of older players to help manage that transition? If he hasn't already been given a 12-month extension, I think he ought to be. No sentimentality involved!

...Same goes for Crookes. If he hasn't been good enough to start regularly in this circus, will he ever be good enough? I don't rate a marginal improvement into 'not a shambles' as evidence enough he warrants another contract.

Bit harsh on Crookes? He has gone from some fairly nasty criticism to becoming...begrudgingly...some people's MOTM. That's too much of an improvement, over a very short period of time, to deny there is a player in there who looks like he is getting used to the demands of the Manager, and style of play he is trying to instil. is there any real point in getting rid of one young player to be replaced by another who may be no upgrade?

Giving a searching test to players already on the books may be more accurate than bringing someone in after a short trial in the close season.

Superb post, that. We often make definitive decisions on far to little evidence and with far to little patience. Form, confidence, interactions with coaches, none of that stuff is fixed and I think Crookes is starting to show there’s a player in there. Anyone remember Pope in the early days?

Little patience? This squad / starting 11 has been pretty similar for the past few years. Crookes and the others have had plenty of time (and managers) to impress

You're absolutely right that a lot of fans give players no time at all. The most stark and ridiculous example I've seen is actually someone who posted on here referring to a player (I forget who) who made a 4-5 minute cameo at the end of a game (I believe his only game time for us), and the person concluded that the player was awful!
