I'm not sure how anyone can really be surprised by the scope of the change. It was always going to happen. Underperforming squad + new regime with opportunity for change = high turnover.

The lot of a lower league manager is a strange one. Most of the time you need to win now, but only have a cycle of a couple of years with most contracts, while your best players tend to get picked off or move on, so it's hard to build a team over a number of years.

Realistically, even if the likes of Brown, Joyce and Pope could help us get promoted they then wouldn't form the spine of a L1 team. The aim has to be to target players that can get us up, and then consolidate in L1 without needing to rip it up again. You can see what has happened with Swindon and Northampton this season.

You can't judge Clarke fully until he has had a full season with his squad, which he will have this time next year. Here's to a good one. The next few weeks could be exciting ones.

Couldn't agree more with all you've said. My one big concern is the shear scale of the task of recruiting so many players in such a relatively short time.  Anyone in business knows how difficult it is to recruit suitable personnel even on a one for one basis let alone a full scale re-structuring as we have here.  I'm hoping that there are already a few 'ducks lined up' to prevent last minute panic recruitment to fill gaps as the new season gets closer!

Good luck Monty and nice length of deal

This isn't a dig at Monty either

But all those bleating about cruel Clarke and this is people's lives etc

This deal was clearly done whilst Monty was under contract and playing for us. It was widely reported last week.

It's a cutthroat business and he's rightly looked after number one so less of the bad boy Clarke and the reality is that they and their agents are always scheming for the next move

He was brilliant at times, eccentric but a crowd pleaser I hope he does well

I was one of the ones that felt some of the reactions on Monday were unnecessary. I fully back Clarke and I think he has 100% done the right thing, it's created a real buzz about the club that hasn't been felt for a long time and I wasn't calling out people for expressing they thought it was the right thing; I just felt there were a few over the top reactions with very unbalanced views and opinions.

Interesting comment from their manager

First Team Manager David Martindale said: I’m delighted to get this one over the line. I was alerted to Cristian last season but for one reason or another, it never quite worked out. I kept my eye on him and have watched a lot of footage of him from this season and I’m now extremely happy to get him this time round.

His name is made up of 3 names fused together with no spare letters. Don’t see that every day.

Such a naive post to say it’s just players and agents who are scheming. Firstly he was due to be out of contract with no offer on the table from us. Did you expect him to sit there and do nothing and just wait to be told yes or no here? Anyone in their right mind would be seeing what deals are out there. It’s common sense.

Secondly clubs know how long potential targets have left on their deals, so they’ll be putting the feelers out to players, agents and contacts on the quiet to check on their situation. Which is exactly what Livingstone have done. This goes on during the season too, players, managers and agents talk to each other. The “scheming” as you call it is done across the board by everyone. They don’t just wait til the end of season to then start looking and sounding out targets.  Do you not think that our club have been doing the exact same thing for the last 3 months to work out who’s available and who they could be potentially getting in to replace the players they want to get rid of? Of course they have. They try to get all their ducks in a row first.

Just want to pay tribute to the greatest port vale striker in this clubs history, Tom Pope, I’ve been saying since his appointment that this clown makes some shocking decisions and i cannot believe we’re releasing out best player, the only one with any bit of class, the only player who can actually bastard head the ball, thank you tom pope, ill never forget days like at the ethiad, hero and vale legend #Thankyoupopey

Parachute payments have run out now, no more next season. Coates is 83. Tick tock.

Vale legend, yes, but he’s not been our best player this season.  Far from it.

He's been a superb player absolutely no doubt, legend yes .

Greatest striker ?

You never saw Martin Foyle or Tony Naylor then playing two divisions higher ?
