Interesting comment from their manager

First Team Manager David Martindale said: I’m delighted to get this one over the line. I was alerted to Cristian last season but for one reason or another, it never quite worked out. I kept my eye on him and have watched a lot of footage of him from this season and I’m now extremely happy to get him this time round.

True about some good players. They have been / were good players but do we really need to keep hold of them for another season. On top money for the Vale too. That is the reason to move them on i believe mpore than anything else.

That’s not what I’m saying. The comment was that all those leaving were crap.

That was not true. I think people should lower their expectations.

Salford and Mansfield have both spent shed loads on better players. It doesn’t mean anything. Look at Morecambe

Some of those players have been excellent. We had them four years ago but the players around them were not up to it. Whether that is budget and we spent too much on certain players i am not sure.

You are right about finance, spending loads of money never guarantees success. Spending money on the right players and getting a team to gel is the answer. Love it when the Salfords fail yet again. More often than not money does help towards promotion. Hope Carol has the money ready.

I honestly dont think too many people can argue that D C has done wrong in this big clearout but i also know there will be many telling him so IF he does fail in recruitment.

Bar Brown, I don't know which players people are so worried about replacing.

Pope was, at most, a back up striker. Joyce was likely to face competition if he stayed. Montano would have been a utility left-sided player and many advocated for a specialist left back. Brisley is the third best centre-back at the club.

We're talking about one regular starter and 4 squad players next season. The rest of the retained list weren't even decisions. No brainers.

Brown will be a challenge, but bar that, we still needed mass improvement of the first 11. Nothing's changed there. If we'd retained the aforementioned players, their roles would have been reduced and replacements for their first team minutes would have been needed.

Largely agree, clearout definitely required, but my concern with releasing Monty and Brown is not so much finding a player in each position to replace them as first choice as it is now having to recruit two players for each position, which you'd assume is harder for an individual position (GK, LB, RB) than for areas where you're likely to be starting more than one in a game (CB, CM, CF).

Finding the first should be doable, but once you sign a first choice LB or Keeper, it's surely harder to convince a second to come when they know they're less likely to be a starter. As such is there more chance of being left with a distinctly second-best back-up option, as opposed to two competing for the position, leaving us not much better off than this season (although hopefully with a less injury-prone first choice).

Obviously with Monty it's a case that he had something better lined up elsewhere anyway, and the absolute best of luck to him as he seems like a good bloke as well as a decent player for our level. Had he stayed and we bought a first-choice LB though, that would have left Monty as cover for LB and competition at LW/LF if playing a back 4, and competition at LWB if playing a back 3. We'll find it hard to replicate that level of cover and quality for Monty's wage, and it would have been far less of a concern that he couldn't play 40 games a season if we had a first choice LB.

All academic now but still, sad to see Monty go.

Similar with Brown, top bloke and I would feel happier if we'd offered him another year, as well as bringing in someone on a longer-term (2- to 3-year) deal. That way whoever comes in would have known that whilst they'd be competing for the no 1 jersey next season, the plan would be for them to be definite no 1 the year after with Brown moving on. Might be same as Monty, Brown has a 2-year deal lined up elsewhere that we couldn't (shouldn't) match, but I guess we'll find out.

Either way, onwards and upwards to when we all reconvene in Big Mad Darrell's House of Pain in August (we should officially change the name of VP to that for one season, imagine them handing over to a reporter on Soccer Saturday and having to call it that!)

I was very sad to see Scott Brown go - I'd planned to sponsor his kit next year.  I remember someone posting one of those clever stat charts on here a few weeks ago which showed that he wasn't the best keeper in our league.  Doesn't stop me thinking it's sad to see him go.

Let us face it, we will be rubbish next season.  Our longest in the lowest tier. What is DC going to pick up? Dross other teams have kicked out, I would love to buy into the DC/AF "project".  But for me it is all  talk talk and no knickers.

Another season of drift with a shouty man shouting. Bloody depressing,

Judge it after 15-20 games of next season.

Yes, we have to be patient but even 15-20 games might not be enough. By Boxing Day last year Bolton who got automatic promotion were in the bottom half of the table and Carlisle who didn't even make the playoffs were third.

To take another example, Blackpool (one of my mate's a Blackpool supporter) got just 7 points out of their first 9 games and even halfway through they were still in the bottom half or thereabouts before going on an amazing run.

Could take a while to bed down.

Good luck Monty and nice length of deal

This isn't a dig at Monty either

But all those bleating about cruel Clarke and this is people's lives etc

This deal was clearly done whilst Monty was under contract and playing for us. It was widely reported last week.

It's a cutthroat business and he's rightly looked after number one so less of the bad boy Clarke and the reality is that they and their agents are always scheming for the next move

He was brilliant at times, eccentric but a crowd pleaser I hope he does well
