Retained list

A few weeks ago the lot could have gone for me. Now I am thinking the more we keep the better we will be. Not sure the manager will see it that way. He might want his own players in. Either way, I trust he will do a good job.

Hi,

It may interest you all to know I'm running a series of articles on the front page. It's looking at the squad position-by-position and asking you to vote on which players you would like to retain.

The first article looks at the goalkeeping position and is here - https://www.onevalefan.co.uk/2021/04/retained-list-2021-which-keepers-should-stay/

Over the coming days and weeks I'll be going through the other positions too.

I think the defence has shown it can be mean and tight so dont see them as a problem. They have what it takes at League 2 level. Might be lacking in pace but big and strong. Midfield lacks some muscle. Think Joyce had done a decent job but because of his age expect us to sign a younger version. Callum Guy has impressed this season and was successful when we had him on loan previously. Yes he is another ex Vale player but was tiggerish in the tackle , good engine and more importantly is in form.

Upfront is where the shake up is needed. Would only keep Rodney and possibly Swann. Popey deserves a statue erecting outside the ground as he is a legend but Fathertime catches up with us all eventually. As regards Theo, Guthrie and Cullen time to go and bring in a 20 goal a season striker to partner Rodney. Yes easier said than done but lets spend those 3 salaries on one player who actually does his day job and score goals.

For the past few seasons it has been said we need  Quality rather than Quantity only for us to go and do the complete opposite. The squad number restrictions might actually make it happen next season.

Guy has just extended his deal at Carlisle I'm sure I read on here .

I agree with most of that, such a fine balance between quality and quantiy.  You could end up putting a big part of your budget on that 20 goal a season striker and he gets injured early on and be out for 6 months.  I certainly don't think you can go with Rodney, a new striker and maybe look at resigining Swann (still unproven), you need more,  Clarke likes to play 2 up front, then you need another 2 strikers on the bench.

Hi folks,

Part two of our front page series is now live. It's asking you to vote on which of the central defenders you would offer a contract to.

The link to the article and link is - https://www.onevalefan.co.uk/2021/04/retained-list-2021-which-central-defenders-should-stay/

If you missed my post yesterday, OVF is running a series of votes, position by position, asking fans who they would offer new contracts to and who they would release.

Yesterday, there were votes on the goalkeepers which is here - https://www.onevalefan.co.uk/2021/04/retained-list-2021-which-keepers-should-stay/

In the coming days we'll be looking at full-backs, wingers, central midfielders and strikers. I'll then publish the results of who the OVF audience think should stay and go...

Its a very interesting dilemma with the CB's. Legge AND Bris have both looked good because they are not isolated playing in a back 5. Legge is still probably one of the best defenders in the division at attacking the ball in the air. The issue for me is you don't want either of them in a back 4. Both have really struggled when the opposition have pulled them out of central positions.Legge doesn't have the pace and Bris turning circle is bigger than the titanic.I think they have both performed brilliantly since switching to a back 5 and I think it will be harsh on either of them not to have a new contract however I don't think we should keep both. In my opinion it should be one or the other and bring in another CB who can play in a back 4 alongside Smith.

I would keep Legge for his leadership and better arial ability.
