Experienced appointment, thought his Walsall team were hopeless every time I've seen them but if we're getting the Bristol Rovers then it can be a masterstroke.

Paying compo (if we have) and handing out a 3 year deal for him seems very strange in current times especially given he isn't really ripping it up with his current team.

All the best Darrell!

Walsall fan here in peace. I've been watching Walsall for over 45 years so I'd like to think I could give you an honest opinion on Darryl Clarke. Firstly I hope he does well for Vale and he repays the faith your owners have placed in him. When he got the managers job at Walsall we were all as excited as Vale fans are now but it didn't take long for that to dissipate. He did some strange things did Clarke and some of the most frustrating are as follows, he never picked his best team but always picked a team to counter the opposition, I know somehow you have to try and do this but it was at the expense of the attacking side of our play, it also meant he never played a settled team, if the team won one week he very rarely played the same team the next game. Always tinkering with the line up. He regularly played players out of position, natural strikers on the wing, left back at right back etc. He always seemed to have his favourites as well who would somehow get into the team no matter how bad they were playing. Watching Walsall was like groundhog day, every game seemed the same, huffing and puffing in midfield with no real cutting edge and if it wasn't for the fact the opposition were wearing different coloured shirts each week you would think it was a replay of the previous game. These are the main reasons Walsall fans are glad to see the back of him. You can't knock his CV and maybe he will do better in different surroundings, I will watch for vales results with interest. Good luck for the rest of the season.

What about all the losses askey had as manager?

A week to turn this sack of <ovf censored> around isn’t enough. Happy or not back him

I have written off this season so will be waiting to see who he ditches and who comes in during the summer and next season will be the tester,to say he should come in and get a win in 4 or 5 days is silly imo.

Adam Yates said earlier that he hasn't totally written off the play offs 😮 as one or two teams always make a late charge from lower down, now imagine that,i still think some would moan that he hadn't got us in to the top 3

He left there 3 years ago. We keep signing people based on their past reputation, particularly players. At least he is mates with Tommy Widdrington.

Obviously, we can’t sign people based on their future reputation.

Maybe having Flitcroft as DOF might help things,i am happy with the appointment and listening to what Chris Lines said of him i like it even more.

On a side note what is your defender Clarke like as i am sure he will move for him in the summer maybe to replace Legge? walsall fans think we will go for sinclair as well BUT as we want a younger team i cant see us allowing him to bring in a 34/35 yr old midfielder

Walsall fan here,(in peace). I will give you an honest opinion on Clarke and I hope he does well at Vale, not for him but for the owners and fans. Watching Walsall under Clarke was very frustrating, he changed the team every week simply to try and counteract the threat of the opposition instead of playing your strongest team every week and letting the opposition worry about you. He signed players then played them out of position, drop players for no apparent reason even if they had just played a blinder the previous game. He liked to play hoof ball constantly to a lone striker who sometimes was about 5ft 6" tall. Never revealed what players were injured or how long they were expected to be sidelined which is fine but fans don't know whats going on and think he has simply fell out of favour. It was a very frustrating time to be a Walsall fan under Clarke and thats why the majority were happy to see him go. I hope things go well for you with him in charge and I will be watching with interest. Best of luck for the rest of the season.

Thanks for that, uncertain times in football at present, as elsewhere.  The main thing in L2 is to escape upwards, we tend to weigh less than other teams due to height and build which puts us at a disadvantage against the robust teams in this league.  So will be interesting to see who he brings in, and whether he is more communicative. Sometimes it is tactical to keep injuries quiet, but we have had unexplained  episodes too. Best of luck too, only us old ones remember the laundry wall at Fellows Park.

Clarke is average at best mate, also prone to the odd mistake which leads to a goal. Big mates with Darryl Clarke though so could see a move on the cards there. Sinclair is getting older but he is a workhorse who covers every blade on the pitch. Cant see Clarke coming in for him but you never know.

Sounds a bit like Legge anyway but a bit younger, from what i have seen and obviously dont see them game in game out but i would take McDonald and Gordon 🙂

Interesting post, CP. Many here would say we had the polar opposite in our previous manager who never seemed to be able to select a team to combat the opposition let alone change it during the game. Best example I can think of is actually your home game when we left the pitch at half time two up and lost 4-3, mainly due to Clarke making four subs on the restart and going on to dominate the game while our staff just stood there and watched. We had a set pattern of play, 433 - and hardly ever deviated from it no matter what happened. It worked at first then we got sussed playing the same way week in, week out and teams would set up to stop us. So much for playing your strongest team every week.

I can see it's going to be a lot different with Clarke from what you're saying!

From our point of view, it seemed Clarke has done a good job at Walsall:

Stabilised the club after relegation (overseeing a large turnover of players)

Currently 6 points off the playoffs

Signed and developed two players that clubs higher up the football league have paid good money for

He's hardly been a Ian Holloway or a Graham Coughlan type disaster but according to most Walsall fans he has! Did you expect to be promoted this year?
