Match Thread: Port Vale v Southend United

Well done, lads. What a great performance even allowing for a more subdued second half. Still, it was a rout, and poor Southend team or not, you still have to beat what's in front of you.

Our new manager will surely have enjoyed that. The substitutes will tell him that, once our better players (Gibbo, Monty and Worrall) have left the match, we look distinctly second rate. It will also tell him that we have some very good players - the core of a good team - and some outstanding talent coming through in Rodney and Hurst (though he was a bit quiet today on the right).

As for Southend, what a bunch of hopeless cloggers. Looks to me that they will be deservedly relegated to the National. Just hope that Grimsby can escape and be replaced by the hapless Stevenage.

Finally, a word for the referee who was worse than useless, letting Southend get away with foul after foul. It's a good job that there were no police in the ground because they might have intervened and arrested Hobson, their brutal centre half, for attempted GBH on Devante and Kurtiss. The only good that can be said of the ref is that when he turns up we see plenty of goals.

Anyway, enough negativity. Great game, great result and everything to look forward to.

UTV - time for a few snifters 😀.

Wonder if the new manager will bring back Legge? Interesting times at Vale Park come next week.

Who ever comes in good luck and hope you take Vale up the league and get promotions that all Vale fans dream of.

Should really go with Crookes if we are serious about developing young players... if not then just play Legge and carry on like we have done for the past 10 years.. bloody awful.

Backups should be at least league standard. I don't think any of Crookes, Fitzpatrick, or Mills are, unfortunately. Hopefully we don't have to start them much again.

I'd beg to differ with your first point, but totally agree with your second.  Ideally we'd have some young prospects waiting in the wings but we aren't currently in a position to do that.

That's fair. Begging Monty isn't injured again as the width he provides is so, so important.

The referee sent Joyce off for less than one of the tackles early on!

Taylors midfield positioning, particularly first half,  was different class, in terms of linking forward moves. Amazing the difference it made when Gibbo and Monty went off.

Sprosons lambasting of Rodney was a joke. Yes the lad made an error, but never heard anyone get dug out so much. Five minutes later,  he started on about it again.

A rare good day for the lads. Well done Pugh.

I'm usually less critical than most on here on refs, but he was poor today.

Was obsessed with giving lectures as opposed to bookings, which the players never listen to. Proper ego trip stuff. Some awful challenges and not enough cautions. Hope none of our players picked up knocks as weak officiating lead to a series of rough tackles.

Spot on. If the squad size is down to 21 (or 20?) next season, then the "back-up" players can't be that much of a drop-off in standard from the "first-choice", as they're inevitably going to be called on to play a fair number of games throughout the season.

The three you mention are quite a bit below the level required IMO, if we've got aspirations of aiming to be a top 7 side next season, and therefore should be released this Summer.
