Goodness me, the news of John really did take my breath away. Very sad day. It's the wingers than get you out of your seat or on to your tiptoes, Vale have been blessed with some belters, Steve Fox, Jon McCarthy, Steve Guppy, Gareth Ainsworth. Johnny Jeffers was up there with the best. Thanks John for the excitement you gave to thousands of Valiants.

Very sad news.

My first memory of JJ was when he was on loan from Liverpool. I think he may have been making his debut because I think he was brought on as a sub. It was a throw in and he ran over towards the incoming ball, looking like he would run with it down the left wing, he jumped into the air and, as he landed, he flicked the ball infield with his head to someone (possibly Beckford) which took every one of the opponents completely by surprise and out of the game. It was a great piece of skill and timing which was obviously just a small taste of things to come.

So many great memories. Liverpool away will always be my fondest memory of JJ. A true Vale legend. RIP

Talking of that Liverpool game...

This is quite an old video from the OVF YouTube channel so the sound is ropey (beware: it's a bit 'boomy') but if you watch from 46 seconds on you see Jeffers trick his former teammates to set up Vale's equaliser:

One memory about JJ was against Stoke in the  FA Cup at VP.I still can’t believe that didn’t go in.Great entertainer,RIP JJ.

I've just told somebody, having had this broken to me, that that moment was my standout memory of him.

That coming back off the post and landing in Ronnie Sinclairs grateful arms.

Really sad news. JJ was the absolute perfect second half sub - you knew when he was brought on that the opposition defence were going to be made to look daft and that you were going to get your money’s worth in terms of attacking entertainment. Condolences to his family and those close to him.

A great player, we just don’t have them like him at the club these days. I feel he had been forgotten in recent years and didn’t realise he had been at the club so long. Perhaps because players like Guppy outshone him later.

However he is every bit a part of a golden generation of players who I hope we may see the like of in future...even if that seems tough at the moment!

RIP
