Still break into a sweat when I think of Alan Buckley, got rid of him and then Don Penn seemed to score every time we played them, they were a real bogey side.

Yep I agree BD, the sheer mention of Alan Buckley's name and that of the football club brings on angst, hope we can beat them Saturday. To Buckley's credit he was a hell of a player for Walsall.

Yes! Real bogey side until Micky put them straight a few years back. My own personal trauma was watching them beat us 1-2 at Vale Park on a Boxing Day yonks ago. But we had the last laugh as we signed John Woodward who got both their goals. I was behind the goal at the Bycars end when the winner went in. Not a nice feeling on Boxing Day!

And what bigger incentive than to pay them back for the 4-3 defeat at their place - a game we should easily have won.

Know I've said this before, but John Connaughton letting on dribble through his legs from about 35 yards in a Cup replay at VP still makes me feel like crying! I can't swear I didn't cry that night....think we lost 3-1 at home having drawn at Fellows Park. You have to come from a certain generation to realise the hatred of Walsall.......not bothered so much now but OMG "We hate Walsall...."....😂

Fantastic memories. 1972. Some therapeutic rehabilitation for Valiants when we tempted ex tormentors John Woodward and Bernie Wright over to Vale Park before they could create any more damage. Growing up in the 70s, I can't ever remember us beating Walsall. Names like Alan Buckley and Bobby Shinton still give me the fear.

Vale, please help an old Valiant who still needs assistance in his recuperation, with a win on Saturday

I remember John Connaughton in goal, Hamil End. Not sure if it was a cup or league game, late 70's or early 80's. I said to my mate, following a very innocuous looking back pass, "I'll laugh if he lets this in"  He did, I didn't laugh

I was just thinking of that, he didn't half get some stick from those leaving the paddock it's still one of the worst goal keeping errors I've seen against the Vale, the old blokes used to say he could have thrown his cap on that !

Connaughton had played really well at Fellows Park to get us a draw in the first game too. That was my first away game at Walsall and we took a really large following, special train the lot. As a young lad I also remember the police throwing so many Vale fans out during the game for being bladdered. The replay still haunts, we were the better side till that goal then Buckley (spit) and his troops were all over us.

Yeh. That's the one alright.

Talking about FA cup games at Fellows Park. Our goalkeeping scurge continued when, only a short few years later, didn't Jim Arnold drop one in from a corner, which saw us lose yet again  1-0 this time?   Oh and that Alan Buckley - doesn't matter as a player or manager,  he always seemed to do us.

Those were the days I remember the Vale fan who went into the pitch at Fellows Park. As he tried to get back into the Vale end the police had hold of his legs and the Vale fans his arms in a tug of war. Those were the days Tranmere and Stockport away on Friday night.

i know it’s a bit off topic, but can anyone tell me why we played our midweek home games on a Monday night, from memory no other club did this.

I thought we lost 2-1 that night after a 0-0 draw at home on the Sunday. If I remember a good crowd of over 11000 at Vale 2500-3000 Walsall fans. Also remember a a 5-0 battering in the cup later. I'm sure Nicky Cross & David Kelly up front for them

I think we played on Mondays because that was our day. Some say it was related to mining and pottery working practices, it was an advantage to work on a Saturday and have Monday off for various reasons don't ask what. Main memory was a cup replay at Stoke ko at 2 or earlier on a Monday afternoon full house at the Vic.
