Bit over the top that mate. Reads like you’re looking for headlines yourself. Football is all about being strong mentally, of course a lot of what went on was self inflicted, but even so if he can’t come out and say that was a hard period in his career, through him not playing and losing the captaincy, without someone sticking the boot in then it’s a real shame.

His relationship with Askey was no secret but he didn’t slag him off as badly as he could have done and what he said about Bennet was spot on too, what he said is nothing that players don’t say to each other anyway.

Looking for headlines myself !!! Hilarious. P****

The club is coming off a poor run and a controversial sacking. Communications should, in my view, be kept low-key whilst the manager position is sorted. Fans are still angry and looking to blame people for what appears to be a lost season.

We win one game and we have radio interviews all over the show, sharing things that are probably best kept quiet. We have the Chairlady and club legend effectively endorsing the interim before any real appointment process has started. Some veiled comments about the previous manager from Tom. Carol's misjudged 'phonecall' comment.

Carol and Tom have a right to say what they want, but if you're going to say the things they have, they can expect a varied response, especially at times like this.

I wish they'd kept their hands down and won some games of football, and got a manager in place. Sometimes, despite the odd moan about 'needing to hear something', it's best to say nothing and let results do the talking.

That's fine Joe, then look back at all the comments what were going on a few weeks ago. Fans get more and more in the dark, because that many rumours going around.

Unfortunately, you aren't ever going to get every fan singing from the same hymn sheet. Some will praise a decision and others will criticise it. Some will demand one thing, and others will demand the direct contradiction. That's football, and humans. I've never quite understood the moaning about the moaning.

The recent uptake in communications has only served to fuel the rumours - the phone call, Tom's comments tonight about the captaincy and what appears to be an accusation of a 'lie'. It's just not needed. Fans are still clutching at straws to explain another season seemingly going belly up.

Football is quite simple - fans are, by and large, happy when you win a lot of games and unhappy when you lose a lot of games. We're not winning many games at the minute, so the fans aren't going to be happy, and want a scapegoat/excuse/reason for this. Candid interviews, opening up about previous managers, and being a bit too honest about what people want to see from the next manager, isn't the best move imho.

Of course, some will demand more openness from the club, but refer to my first paragraph.

One thing I will say Joe, Pope is a massive vale fan and would always give his all. You can not say that with some of them in that squad, and they need to know even if it does cause unrest.

He suggests that he, Legge, Worrall, Conlon, Joyce etc wouldn't allow people to not try.

So who phoned Carol?

I imagine Legge or Joyce, as they'd not performed well. I would never accuse either of them of not trying. Good professionals who always work hard and have been captain here and elsewhere.

Both have received red cards, which hurt the side - Joyce's led to the collapse, Legge contributed to the Mansfield debacle.

I know absolutely nothing but I assume it would be one of those two, or Conlon, who Pope was effusive about his excellent leadership characteristics.

I think it was less about 'sorry for not trying' and more 'sorry for being bad'.

I really like what's happened this week with Carol and Pope on radio Stoke. Clearly the club have been listening and are trying to get more information so we have can understand their point of view, rather than a wall of silence.

We may not agree with the some or any of the points either have made, however we know where they stand.

Well done Vale for trying to be very honest and open with us as much as possible.

So you think everyone tried the last few games? We are going to have to disagree I'm afraid, because we have been crap at best

I don't think it really matters. Reading the thread I think fans are trying to read too much into it and other comments by ex Captain Tom. It could have been only 2 players or even 15 .. who knows. It just shows there was at least one player in the squad sorry to see JA go and felt on reflection they could possibly done more.

I don't know if you watched or listened to the commentary last night but that game might have clouded your judgment?

I have defo seen more effort, grit and determination in the last 2 games than the last 6 from JA's team. We may have been crap with the ball last night but the effort is there.

If Tom Pope has said that he was struggling with his mental health then no-one on here should be questioning that.

He’s a Vale fan, it means more to him than other players I guess. He has the player side of it and the emotion as a fan I dare say. If he isn’t playing or losing the captaincy it would hurt and he said it hurt.

It should be applauded that he has spoken out and understood. At a time like this since then with the pandemic many more will struggle, footballers and general men alike. I’ve got down during this whole episode and people like Tom talking about it will help others not feel alone or ashamed, especially blokes who don’t talk about emotions as much as a rule.
