Next Manager

Another week draws towards Saturday, and I get ever closer to winning my bet on Pugh by default.

Cancel the 'Speed not Haste' mantra, please. I want to book a holiday. Take your sweet time, Vale. Really think this through.

Up the Hesitant/Ponderous Whites.

Considering the strategy u-turned about a week ago, from 'don't disrupt things, stick with Danny', to 'it will be experienced, and Pugh doesn't want it', I'm not surprised we're still waiting.

I have no issue with it, as I prefer the latter, but we only really started engaging with a proper managerial interview process last week.

The window is now shut and you could argue a case for letting Pugh get on with it until the end of the season and saving a few quid until we've got a bit more time and space to sort it out. But it seems we are a good 3/4 of the way into the process and expectations are that we'll have a new manager soon.

What puzzled me rather was our lack of an appointment earlier in the window to give the new fella a bit of time to assess the squad and to bring in 1-2 of his own players. We've done what we've often done before and used a few contacts in the game (Tongue and Sproson) to bring in a couple of very young and inexperienced lads as back up and cross everything it works out.

It's the timing of this that seems strange to me.

My strong preference is we bring someone is before the season is out to let them assess the squad.

That said, if their isnt anyone out there who we consider good enough, I don't have a problem with waiting for the right man, as long as Danny P keeps us stable.

This would allow us to do one of two things.... 1) See if anyone else becomes available or 2) reassess next years total spend budget to create a little more room to increase the manager budget in order to attract someone who does fit the criteria

Either way... folks wont be happy.

Askey got sacked exactly 1 month ago and I feel like we are nowhere near appointing a new manager.

Well we've ruled out a number of candidates. Including err, the guy that's currently in the role. Poor Danny, he doesn't want the job. Why are we punishing him like this?

If we lose on Saturday we could potentially drop to 20th with most teams below us having games in hand. We are still in a relegation battle so for me there should be a manager appointment sooner rather than later

Having recently seen Grimsby and Southend i’d suggest we may have enough points now ,to stay up.If the National League vote to cancel their season then we won’t have to bother our arses.I think we should appoint a new manager soon if only to prepare for next season most likely in League 2 but an outside chance of League 1.UTV.

If Pugh is given the job based on beating a couple of teams that should probably have been playing with mates across the road in Burslem Park instead, when we've apparently had tons of applicants who many will have actual experience, then the club deserves everything it will have coming to it. It would be Michael Brown all over again. Seems this club never learns.

Still, it will least appease all the happy clappers here with zero ambition who are a part of the reason for club hasn't gone anywhere for years.

My God. Let it go, sad act.

My message was from 2 days ago... heed your own advice.

Last think I will say on the matter as its derailing a thread... I suggest it's best not to make up any stories, or post your "In the Know" stuff that proves not to be true so you have to end up backtracking. 110% not a good idea.

Hopefully lesson learned.

What if we cant find someone in our budget that suits the criteria at this time and we decide to hold out until we find the man think is best suited and let Danny hold the tiller until that point? Do we "Deserve everything we have coming to us" then?

That would be different. But I wouldn't be surprised if the club isn't just holding things off in the hope that Pugh has enough time to perhaps put a few results together so that they can then appoint him and tell everyone that he deserved the opportunity.

We're a mess as a club, particularly on the field, and appointing a bloke from within who has next to no experience as a manager to suddenly start to put things right would be shocking.
