Surely we want the best man for the job regardless of an affiliation to the club either past or present.

Would you say no to Dean Smith or Gareth Ainsworth because they have played for us in the past? (I know neither would even consider the position currently)

I agree tbf

When all said and done i will back Carols choice whoever it is,i dont expect that to be my choice but it isn't my money on the line,if she is going for a young fresh approach(which i think she will) then that could be exciting as long as it doesn't turn out like Brown of course 🙂 how the game is going it seems to be the younger new coaches who are doing well, maybe with modern ideas

Too true that JA was hounded out.

How was he hounded out ?

There are no crowds booing or a toxic atmosphere , sadly for John results dictated his fate.

Yes there has been unrest on social media and the radio but he has not been hounded out , certainly not by supporters anyway

If you read between the lines of that article it becomes even clearer that Askey was shafted and it looks like Pope was involved.

I don’t think you need to read between the lines.Whatever a coincidence JA has gone ,players are returning and Pope wants to play and score goals for Danny Pugh.****house(s).

Aspin was an outside appointment.

I said at the time. Had we appointed the Eastleigh or Boreham wood manager then this place would of self imploded. Aspo simply had no right to be in the frame, his Gateshead team were ambling around in mid table.

He was only appointed to placate the fans and rally the troops based on his Vale playing career

Was an awful lazy appointment by you know who.

JA was thrown under the bus. In all fairness to Tom, Askey has wanted to get himout of the door since becoming manager, they don't get on, JA did not like his influence, he ctiticised Tom's fitness and lifestyle and dropped him on numerous occasions. JA should possibly have shown Tom some respect, he was always on a loser with Tom and fans of Tom, like me.

Just been reading Popes piece in the sentinel today and from that it seems like the players want Pugh(i do know he is liked by all at the club, not sure if thats a good thing or not)

I don’t want the manager liked, I want him respected. You just have to listen to ex players like yates talk about adams. He has loads of respect for him, but they knew where they stood if they didn’t perform.

Respect? Maybe a pro should look after himself better and have a better lifestyle. I was no fan of askey but sorry not having that. If your a pro footballer and can’t look after yourself you should pack it in. I’d 100% be looking to move pope on this window and all the others who gave 0% effort recently

The problem is that he probably is in all but title. His article is the complete opposite of his article when aspo (I'll never sub tom pope) left. He wants pugh to get the job cos he knows he can lean on him to play him. For me, the sooner he's out of the club the better for all. It's not rocket science to see that the one full season that we've done well out of the last 3 is the one in which we had a manager who saw beyond Pope.

Exactly. His articles come across as if he’s the boss of vale. Maybe should concentrate on turning up when selected?

In terms of liking a manager and respecting them - I would very much favour the latter over the former.  It may be that the present squad "like" and "respect" Danny Pugh, but the "liking" bit may be to do with the fact that he is known to them, and they feel they may already have some influence with him - especially the senior pros, as someone say on here earlier.

I would much prefer a manager that players respect fro the way they go about things, their honestly, and their man management.  I remember watching a documentary on Brian Clough a while ago where they interviewed John McGovern, who followed Clough from club to club and was his skipper at Forest.  He said how much her respected Cloughie, but he wouldn't want to go for a drink with him, or socialise with him.  We need someone who can come in afresh, be sufficiently remote from the players not to get emotional about dropping them when they are gash, and handle the fallout when they spit their dummy out of the pram on being dropped.  A strong character who can rebuild this squad and make it competitive again is what we need. Not sure an internal appointment fits that spec if I'm honest.

In respect of my earlier comments, I know for sure that Tom did in fact 'knuckle down' with his fitness. he is and no one will never be bigger than the club but please look around - since 2012/ 13 we have not had a better striker or player for that matter. Now perhaps the time has come for Tom to either move on or contribute less. But we would have been in the sh*t without him, Askey or not. The whole lot is again a shambles.
