the ongoing mystery of mr mckirdy

I wonder if it is as simple as not having a full pre-season? The same could be said for Theo Robinson. Even Fitzpatrick had a slow start as he caught up on his fitness.

It also takes time to settle. Arguably both Legge and Joyce took a season to bed in and were much better from season 2 on. Wheras someone like Scott Brown was good from day one. So, it can vary from player to player.

I think sometimes people think players are just robots and can be simply switched on to do a job. There's a lot for players to take onboard - moving house, possibly moving the family and kids if they have them (I know McKirdy is originally from the area but he's still had to move back from Carlisle and so on), new team mates, new coaches, new tactics and so on. Sometimes it is fine and they settle right away, sometimes it takes a while, sometimes it never happens.

The upheaval must be even more so with the extraordinary circumstances we've had in 2020.

That's why I always think it's dangerous to judge a new Vale signing on what they did at another club - the circumstances are different at each club. I do hope it comes good for him as he's clearly a goal threat but I think Askey wants widemen with more positional discipline right now.
