No, I meant the individual average wage that is applied for the purposes of the cap?

"Any contract entered into on or prior to today’s vote will be capped at an agreed divisional average until that contract expires"

Think it's 1.5 million in our league and 2.5 million in League 1.

£1.5m split between 22 players is just over £68k.

Cant find this anywhere, but this is around what I recall seeing when it was introduced.

I guess, in the short term, this will be a disincentive to higher paid, underperforming players moving on.

Agreed.  This is where we would struggle to upgrade Pope in the short term, however if an advantageous contract was offered to him elsewhere there would still be a significant wage saving for the club.

My understanding is that from contract renewals they have to fit within the salary cap, rather than just being included at the average level.

This I believe will have a massive impact on the offers to the likes of Legge, Joyce, Pope, Manny and possibly even Brown in the summer.  However the majority of these need to be moved on / replaced by younger players to take us forward.

How can that be right? Doesn't it defeat the whole object if players you don't want can simply be deselected and therefore not included in the cap figure, and replaced by new signings? The wages of those deselected still have to be paid after all. Or have I misunderstood?

According to the Senile, they could get around the cap by opting to ‘de-select’ a player for the second half of the season, meaning they wouldn’t be included in the squad list sent to the EFL and couldn’t be selected for the rest of the season.

No, you're correct. You run the risk of a player being completely unable to play for 6 months and kicking up a right fuss, but I imagine the likes of Salford could handle this.

A list of the out of contract players promises a big summer. There's a lot of decent players, and a few old ones. Do we opt for a bit of a refresh, or stick with this core for another year and hope Askey can deliver?

Out of contract:

Brown, Visser

Legge, Brisley, Mills, Fitzpatrick, Crookes, Campbell-Gordon

Montano, Hurst, McKirdy, Oyeleke, Trickett-Smith, Joyce

Pope, Cullen

(Obviously with Robinson likely to be on his way too).

Our business from this window onwards has to be planned out with what we intend to do in the summer. We've been caught out by only 1, maybe 2 signing (Rodney and Fitzpatrick) making consistent positive contributions to the first 11 (out of 8).

I'm not saying we categorically make final decisions, but are both Pope and Cullen let go? Is Oyeleke given another contract? Does either Legge or Brisley get another year? Are Mills and Fitzpatrick really good enough for a team with top 7 expectations?

Right now, I'd say only Brown, Montano, Hurst, and Joyce are guaranteed a new deal.

Based on this presupposition, a CB (ideally one with a degree of mobility) and a forward are top of the list. We won't sign the long-term solution this window, but the scouting should be going on and list of targets assembled.

I do think we need to look at a young goalkeeper. Either one from our youth set up or a rough diamond released from the prem league.

Sooner or later Brown is gonna retire or leave. Visser seems to be back up and I really don't fancy seeing us struggling for a solid number one like that season where we had a load of shocking - average keepers on the books like Lainton/Hornby/Kroos or Fasan/Mehmet/Boot
