Bernie found the commute from the North East a chore, he was here for about 12 months and for a lot of that time his wife was pregnant. We agreed to cancel his contract to allow him sign for Darlington.

After some matches, you'd see him on Hamil Road trying to get away in a hurry, he must have jumped straight into his car in his dirty kit.

I thought he was in digs down here, I used to see him in the petrol station at night in Sneyd Green, he’d be hanging round in there chatting to the cashier, mind you she was very tasty.

Billy's biscuit tin and the strange claim by him of being handcuffed to a radiator during an alleged robbery  at his home.

When asked by the police if anyone had a grudge against him he handed them the Stoke phone directory!

Still, it was Bell wasn't it.

A week or two after it was supposed to have happened, I remember nearly dying of hypothermia after a game trying to get hold of Everton tickets.

Some bloke in the queue is supposed to have seen Belly coming out of the ground and told him 'I wouldn't mind being handcuffed to your radiator right now'.

I used to see him a lot locally and thought at the time he was living in digs in Old Butt Lane, the part which is off West Avenue, almost behind what was the bank next to the old ICL / Celestica factory.  At the time, despite apparently not drinking, he used to occasionally frequent the Cauldwell Tavern with several of the other players, prior to going up 'Castle.
