Very surprised you haven’t been filling the forum up in regards to pope yesterday...

How is it unbalanced?

Before that we won 4 league games on the trot....... were you asking for Askey to get a contract extension then???? mmm

Well the can’t can they? It’s exactly what we haven’t been able to do since he’s been here. Been very good when teams attack us but very poor when we need to break them down.

no idea re Macclesfield as I don’t follow them but they were in a completely different division. I’m sure macc fans have actually said that this is an issue of askeys anyway
This team currently struggles.

If what you say is correct about the Macc fans then maybe they had a few years under Askey where they struggled to break teams down that sat deep and hit teams on the break.

This culminated with them winning the league. You don't win leagues if you can't break teams down who sit deep.

He did that with a budget that was barely competitive in the league that they are in.

I would say that our budget is more competitive in our league so in theory there should be slightly less gambles and he should be able to to replicate it in less time.

Whether that happens remains to be seen but I have never seen Port Vale win a league and would happily put up with a year in mid table if that is the outcome.

Even under Micky we had a year where we played with a flat back 5 and a midfield that consisted of Fraser, Griff, Loft and Rob Taylor. The football was dire but he put the foundations in that led to what was looking like a great season before he left for Sheffield.

Football was quite exciting under Micky. I used to love watching Vincent; JMW and pope, was quality.

One glaring problem is the lack of consistency. Ok loosing 6 games on the bounce was consistent lol 😂. But who knows what Port Vale team is going to turn up this wkend !!!! I don’t mind the team playing consistently well and getting beaten by a better team, fare play to that. But we seem to have too many players having a bad day at the same time, that’s the most frustrating things about the Vale for me.

A lot of clubs employ a structure of Coach + Recruitment Specialist (whether this be a DoF or otherwise).

There's no doubt Askey can improve players, organise them into an identifiable pattern, and seems to be well-liked by the vast majority of the squad. He's trusted by the owners, is calm and not reactionary, and has an *overall* upwards trajectory during his time here.

Maybe, when the finances improve post-pandemic, it might be worth seeing if there are any 'recruitment' people who can come in and lift the burden on that side, allowing Askey to focus on what he does best.

Someone who could identify the players to fit Askey's system, and trust Askey to improve them/utilise them correctly could be beneficial. I think it's fair, nearly 2 years in, that Askey has a patchy record with signings, even when backed by great owners. Some managers just have flaws, and his seems to be a reliance on agents/contacts when it comes to signings, thereby restricting the pool of players he has to select. Imo, Askey should be turning to someone saying 'I need a defensive midfielder, under 23 to replace Joyce long-term', the recruitment team give him a list of 5, and Askey selects from that list. That might be happening now, but a lot of the signings seem to be either Askey knows them/knows their agent/saw them play against Macclesfield or Vale.

Under Micky we had George Foster heading up the recruitment, and he got a moved to Swansea to coordinate their European scouting after unearthing Hugill (and Andoh joined us a couple of months after he left so I assume he was involved in the process there). A similar appointment could be worth the outlay long-term.

The system has changed now,  most games are recorded, promising players spotted in the comfort of an office. Unfortunately seen by all and sundry not just John Rudge in a deserted ground. Some clubs just sign players to suit their style and future requirements, whereas others allow coaches to check players personalities.

Good evening fellow Valiants,

I hope you are all well. Did you know that on this day in 1985 Australian cricketer David Boon scored his 1st Test century with a 123 versus India at Adelaide. Pretty incredible.

Unfortunately fellow Valiants, sitting 14th in the fourth tier of English Football is not as incredible as David Boon's 123 against India back in 85'.

The prophecy claimed that John Colin Askey was the man to bring glory back to the streets of Burslem, a prophecy misread it could've been.

All the very best,

Jeff.

I had no idea he did this and I'm a big Talking Heads fan.
