Not sure he was walking on eggshells when he:

- referred to black players as “coloured”

- used a lazy racist stereotypes about South Asians and their supposed career preferences.

- claimed that being gay was a “choice”

Very worrying he did that in-front of the select committee talking about the abuse players receive on social media... if the above statements are him on his best behaviour, I dread to think what he is like behind closed doors.

In one afternoon he has lost the confidence of black, gay and south Asian players... and stepping down was the only option he left himself.

People have become more sensitive, whether that's being "over sensitive" is debatable.  I think you're right though that the comments were not intentionally malicious, just clumsy and ignorant.

Fair play to the guy for stepping down, often it's not the case and these public figures want to cling grimly onto their positions when they fail to maintain the expected standards.

My god, what are things coming to when someone asks not to be banned for  posting his opinion?

An opinion that I and many many others,  completely agree with.
