Standard of match officials

The problem with these up and coming young refs is they have never played the game at any level and have no understanding of it, if you look at the refs in the staffs county league the best ones are the ones who played till they were in there 30sand then went into reffing .
They ought to watch a video of Collina reffing

We have threads on referees every season.

I imagine the job is getting harder and harder, as the game is far quicker now than it was formerly, players are more adept at conning officials and playing for fouls, and there are lots of new laws handed down from on high each year.  TV slow motion and replays don't help their cause, nor Sky's dozens of different camera angles.

By the law of averages you will get some poor ones as well as good ones but like RR says they don't deliberately make bad decisions and are in the game for the love of it.

It's hard when it's your team on the receiving end, very hard, but things do have a tendency to even themselves out and referees make far fewer mistakes than players.

I agree with CB about the need for officials to speak to players and communicate with them, even to admit mistakes, like Nigel Owens. It's a shame that the FA and many referees down go down another route and want to be dictatorial centres of attention. Communication is paramount for a referee.

Another frustrating match as a result of yet another weak referee stopping the game every 30 seconds.

I have noticed now that in our three league games so far, all three have seen serious fouls committed on Vale players. A deliberate elbow, a deliberate stamp and today a dangerous studs up lunge straight through Smith. All three transgressors stayed on the pitch because of the incompetence of the officials. These are game changing decisions.

Are we following up on this!?

I can’t remember if that first elbow on smudge was dealt with during the game. If not that should have been looked at afterwards as it was so blatant. The final clip with the tackle on him was a shocker and IMO should have been a red.

Poor form that, Glen.

Well, he certainly has more personality than most refs. Mr. David Ellery (Harrow) immediately comes to mind. He was a housemaster you know.

By the way, when did referee's stop being introduced in match day programmes as "Mr"? And more importantly why?

🤔

We have all heard this -  "why are there not more Coloured people in Football management".     and we have seen everybody and his dog jump on the band wagon  but we never seem to hear :-  "Why are there not more ex players in Refereeing ?"  Nobody on TV, Media, or anyone ever takes up that challenge.    Refereeing is a closed shop and only widgers who have never played the game need apply. Most of them were the kids who were always picked last at school.

Quite simple really. They don't want to do it.

What people don't realise is that it takes years, years and more years of hard work to progress to the league panel. The last thing ex players want is hard work.

Talk at one time was of fast tracking ex players to the league list, but even then none stepped into the breech.

Most players prove on a Saturday afternoon that they dont understand the laws (not rules) of the game and even less could tell you that there are 17 of them.

Being an ex player does not make you understand the laws, or indeed interpret them, any better than a housemaster from Harrow.

I thought that disgraced Bobby Madley had been invited to ref in League 2 this season? Has he done so, or have I just missed him? Or did it never materialise?

Speak of the devil..... he’s reffing us on Saturday.

One of my gripes is the number of inexperienced referees we have at our level. I know they have to learn somewhere but for the last couple of years it seems like we've been getting first year refs most weeks.

Well, Saturday's ref is certainly experienced.

What did he do?

He foolishly shared a video with his friend of a disabled person with some derogatory remark added.

This "friend" then sent it to the Premier League, who subsequently fired him.

His partner is Finnish and he has supposedly been reff'ing and living in Finland since.

Hope he's not as bad as the last so called upper echelon ref that we had. The clown who gave a penalty against smith for absolutely nothing and then proceeded to baffle everyone for the rest of the game. Can't remember his name but the fourth official was quoted as saying that he wasn't used to reffing at our level, as an apparent excuse!
