Why get on the backs of the players.? In these difficult times where we need as much money coming into the club as possible, should we not have put a stronger team out there with a view to winning and getting a financial reward from playing in the next round. We could be heading for Lockdown 2, which will mean the suspension of football again and with furlough ending at the end of next month, I thought this would have been a good opportunity to get more money into the club. Getting Man City in the cup did us a massive favour that probably put us in a better position to get through the closed season.

If we do well in the league will anyone give a toss about the league cup

No, you’re quite right. No one will, including myself.

But I don’t see how tonight’s team selection is going to benefit a season which still have 45 out of 46 games still to play.

However, it seriously impinged our chances of League Cup progression.

That, to me, is the difference.

Normal service resumed in this competition, as we boast the worst record in the country. No problem tonight, as players did ok against a very strong Fleetwood team.Far different than a September evening a few years ago when we witnessed a magnificent Vale 5-2 win in the league.Good luck for rest of the season John and Dave,as positive signs are appearing.

I for one think Askey did absolutely the right thing with the team last night.

The League Cup has never been kind to us and we’ve had two difficult away draws, plus what’s the point of having a plum tie against Everton when you can’t go and see it??

Last year we had a good 11, this year we’ve got a strong 22+ and all of those players will want game time otherwise there will be some discontent which we don’t want. That is the trade off.

Last night was arguably the least important game of the season for me but one where we’ve seen a battling generally performance against strong opposition, game time for younger players (Hurst, DTS) plus seen our reserve goalie put in a very good performance.

People judge the players who do well in this timeframe i.e we’ve only seen a couple of games of Rodney and you can tell he’s got something to offer visser people singing his praise why can’t it work the other way, I for one would love Robinson to be a success for us it would be weird if I didn’t but from what I’ve seen he isn’t up to scratch for whatever reason that is, and it would take a big step up in performance for him to be considered in our strongest eleven. It’s got nothing to do with his missed chance either he offered nothing all game and people will say we didn’t play to his style of play- that’s when you find out how good a player is, when someone’s not involved in games they adapt they go looking for the ball they try to make things happen Robinson spent the whole game as a bystander and let the full 90 minutes pass him by without doing anything that’s the worrying part. Yes he doesn’t like the ball hoofed up then maybe start sniffing out the second ball make yourself a pest read where the next ball is going to drop, demand the ball to feet. He offered next to nothing and there cbs won’t have a easier game all season
We signed Rodney on July 7th, he's had a full preseason. We signed Robinson 3 weeks ago. Robinson already has a goal to his name as well.

Askey clearly made 10 changes to give the fringe players some game time to improve their fitness. I'm sure he actually mentioned treating the cup games as an extension of preseason.

As for happy clapping, I've been one of the most critical posters on here under Smurthwaite's reign if terror. Thankfully there is reason to be positive again at Vale.

Let's just not write a player off in Robinson that had the 2nd best goals to minutes ratio in L2 last season! Especially after 2 games!

With that ref we could have Messi in the team and we would still have lost.
That's simply not true though is it?

The ref was poor and gave them a lot of soft free kicks.

At the same time we were foolish and kept getting too tight to them giving them the opportunity to go down amd con a weak ref.

We switched off for our own throw in having just made a couple of subs in quick succession and no one appeared to know their job.

We missed a sitter from 2 yards out.

We were unable to get the ball to our striker who I don't think retained possession once in the whole game.

We were on top for a 20 minute spell at the start of the second half and otherwise were chasing the game.

The ref was poor but we lost the game because our second string were second best to a team near the top of the league above.

That one up top system suits players like Cullen and Pope who can play it well by holding it up and bringing others in. I’m not sure about Robinson yet in that role, but as others have said he’s a bit short with not having a full preseason, so it may take him a bit longer. We may be saying the same about Pope and Gibbo when they eventually get to play after missing quite a few games too.

Based on last night's performance, I'm more convinced than ever that this is a promotion season.

We put out a '2nd string' against a strong L1 side and held our own for most of the game. They had Ched Evans and Paddy Madden up top and our 'reserve' CB pairing handled them really well. We have 4 very capable L2 CBs. Oyeleke controlled the middle of the pitch for an hour, Hurst showed that he can be another attacking option and McKirdy showed glimpses of brilliance, including an assist. The likes of Pope, Gibbons, Rodney, Amoo and Conlon weren't even considered to play a part.

I could go on. The reality is that if you plonked us in the league above this season, we'd hold our own and wouldn't go down. We didn't even get our of 1st gear on Saturday yet still blew away another side in the division. I don't agree with the number of changes with the carrot of Everton at home awaiting the winner, but one thing is clear from last night - we have squad of 20+ players who are all more than able to play at L2 level and as long as Askey can manage this strength in depth, there's absolutely no excuses for not challenging for automatic promotion.

All in all a decent work out and performance by the reserves against a top league one outfit at their yard....10 changes and the only continuity Mills the second choice right back.

Visser was again very good and should heaven forbid Brown miss a run of games with some niggle no qualms about Visser playing but also both Brisley and especially Crooke who could go on to form a long term partnership with Smith were again excellent.

Whitehead got a goal plus more game time and is usefull back up in midfield while both Tricky-Smith and Hurst had good performances but mostly Oyeleke and Montano got through another game and must be only a couple of weeks away from the first team while McKirdy got a debut and an assist but with no pre-season might need a fair few weeks of the hard yards to get up the old fitness up.....as for Robinson another with precious little pre-season got a full 90 minutes in on the way to match fitness.

In the firm belief that only the league matters and it is a truncated saturday/tuesday/saturday kinda season and all about the squad then Askey did right to treat the cup games as an extension of pre-season....and to think essentially the reserves with players not fully fit gave a team aiming for the Championship a good game and if it had gone to a penalty shoot out with Visser something of a penalty specialist there was only going to be one winner.....essentially it came down to that throw in.

I’m not sure I like Robinson as a sole striker, doesn’t get involved enough.

That’s my big concern. He isn’t like Pope who gets involved all over the pitch that’s for sure. Robinson is good at getting into goal scoring positions but as a loan striker can easily be simply be marked out of the game.
