Match Thread: Port Vale v Crawley Town

Harrogate have said hello to the league and saying we are here to compete and not make the numbers up by the looks of it.  Saw them on EFL Quest and their manager said we only expect to be bottom part of the league, but we like to play nice footy.  Could they be the surprise team this season.

16 now.

No surprise it was the referees first game, had a howler with the elbow incident. Given Askey and Pughs fury at the time I expect we will report that and I expect the centre half will be retroactively charged with dangerous conduct which the rules now allow.

Bit dodgy down the flanks again but first choice wingbacks not starting so not a worry.

Pleased overall! Bit scrappy in the second half which allowed them back into it, but we'll improve like most teams as the season goes on. Some excellent performances - Smith and Legge were faultless. Conlon quality in the middle of the park when he can get on the ball. Joyce as solid as ever. Cullen doing what he does best and Rodney, who ran himself into the ground and had their full-back on toast until he unsurprisingly tired. Well done all!

Brown 7, Mills 6, Legge 8, Smith 8, Fitzpatrick 5, Joyce 7, Conlon 7, Burgess 6, Worrall 7, Rodney 7, Cullen 8

The record continues. Grinding out a good solid win against a dirty side.

-Thought Rodney was quality today and will only get better with each game

- Smith and Legge solid at the back again

- Mr reliable Brown once showing again why he's the best keeper in league two

- Crawley and Stevenage both need to be in the bin. Horrible sides that kick lumps out of the opposition for 90 minutes , hope they both go down

Three points and a clean sheet even without key players shows how we strong in depth we are. Bring on Tuesday UTV

One slight criticism I have is that I thought Askey left the subs too late. At least one of them should have been on 10 minutes sooner. Rodney was done after 65 minutes. Montano was a threat when he came on but needed a bit longer. Surprised that Oyeleke wasn't brought on for at least 10 minutes either as he would have got on the ball and carried it upfield.

I thought we did well not to get dragged into a scrap.

When a team comes and starts a bit of nonsense with Smith, you know that's normally their game plan, make it ugly and try to nick a goal.

I've seen one or two gripes about individual performances but at the end of the day we kept them at arms length. You certainly would have known about it if we'd been losing individual battles up and down the pitch.

If we were a bit more clinical in front of goal we could have ran in 3 or 4 but I'll take a 2-0 win.

Crawley are a horrible team. They play exactly how their manager looks. Mid-table at best for them this season I think.

Well done, Vale - at times a scrappy game but with a clean sheet, two goals and three points preserving our unbeaten record on the opening day.

Highlights for me were Rodney's hour or so of play until he ran out of steam, Cullen's two goals and a really solid performance by our two centre-backs.

MOM for me - Leon Legge who never put a foot wrong.

The worrying bits were our two, admittedly second choice full backs, who never got to grips with their wide players and, Fitzpatrick's goal line header aside,  gave us some worrying moments; and our midfield in the second half. But with our squad we can look forward to Gibbo and Manny coming back, and one or two others as well. Left back is going to be a conundrum again this season but, for me, Monty is much to be preferred over Fitzpatrick or Crookes.

In the top three already - big challenge then at Exeter on Tuesday!
