Because he voted for Brexit. This is the criteria for being a member of Boris's cabinet. No ability or experience  required. Hence the mess the country is in at all levels. This is not to say there aren't people of ability or integrity in the Tory party but they have been jettisoned by Boris ..sorry Cummings who runs the show .Boris is merely a stooge.

It's better late than never but as you say creates other issues now for HE with problems around accommodation, places, etc.

Another difficulty waiting in the wings is next year's summer exams. Yr 10s and Yr 12s have missed over 4 months teaching, they have already decided to cut down the content of some papers, and if any schools have to close because of the virus then what happens to their exams next summer.

I wonder if it was wise to ditch AS exams and not to give students recognition for continual assessment/coursework.

Maybe if Williamson goes (doubtful) they can put Grayling in charge. 👨‍🎓😉

What an absolute shambles by the Tories, everything they touch crumbles the quality of politicians is lamentable, but it's a funny old world, going back to the run up to the last election Labour described the " Deeply unfair" system of teachers predicting grades they said how unfair they were but also discrimination.

The BBC reported..

“Black applicants had the lowest percentage accuracy with only 39.1% of grades accurately predicted, while white applicants had the highest grade prediction accuracy at 53%.”

Angela Rayner said that disadvantaged students would be even more more disadvantaged and that teacher predicting grades was inaccurate leading to disadvantaged students missing out on opportunities.

I am NOT defending the Tories before the usual suspects accuse me of doing so but I think it's only fair to point out that the opposition I guess would more than likely have turned to Roger Taylor and his bungling band of bureaucrats.

So if predicted grades for disadvantaged students were already unfair, then the decision to mark down those same students, but mark up the most privileged is even more of scandal.

Looks like Gormless Gav will be deservedly sacked for not the first time. The problem the Tories have is that they are completely devoid of Talent, so who replaces him. Just to prove the fact Dido Harding, wife of leading Brexiteer MP has been given the job of interim head of Cummings new health body. After she has made a complete Horlicks of running Test and Trace. It has got that bad even Boris's boys don't come on here to support him now.

The blame lies with Williamson and Gibbs.

They knew in advance what was going to be the outcome of this programme months ago when they instructed Ofqual (via Cambridge Assessment) to organise and run it. They were told what the consequences would be but went ahead and were insisting bullishly over the weekend still that it was robust and fair. They've only moved because they're worried about losing votes not because they recognise they were wrong. Don't blame Ofqual. They did what they were told to do by the government. Williamson and Gibbs should both go.

Predicted grades are notoriously hard to get right. They are sent off months before the exam and no-one knows what is going to happen on the day. I believe something like 95% of these predicted grades were within one grade. But it's hard. We all know that.

As I said above, I would have kept some continual assessment built into the system and seriously considered whether or not it was wise to ditch AS levels. At least, then, you have something tangible to go by.

We might get problems next summer as well. I hope we are better prepared for it.

How on earth is he still in a job?

How on earth did he get a job?  As the Minister of Defence he was telling the generals that they should fit weapons on to tractors, or something equally as ridiculous.  The totally inept Theresa May sacked him, following an investigation by the equally inept head of the civil service at the time.

I suspect that from his time as Chief Whip he knows lots of secrets, and that is the key to his continued survival.  He is as inept and incompetent as Grayling but without the background dirt to dish out.
