I wonder where he met Dave Kevan.

On the face of it an excellent result for the club. Feels weird to have all this good news! Is he taking over bits from Sevvy Aslam/Mick Ede here or is this a new over-arching position?

Successful ex-Pro like Frank will have lots of coaching contacts in the game so hopefully an avenue here for an ongoing relationship with Chelsea or Leicester, like how we've benefited from Gary Brazil twice sorting us out with Jake Taylor.

In fact going by the non-stop well wishes he's getting on twitter it looks like we've signed Jesus up. Current pros, ex pros, coaches, media presenters, football reporters, big names in the game all buzzing for him. Hugely positive move, well done Vale.

My brother-in-law is an old school Chelsea fan, he says something died in him the day they let Big Frank go - he represented the last of the grounded normal lads who’d come up through the ranks  (he doesn’t count Terry). Great appointment, I can’t quite believe it. I hope we get to play some football now!

I wonder if we'll see the return of some sort of "development squad"?

Or maybe not a squad but 4-5 young, rough diamonds released from clubs higher up the pyramid for us to polish up?

it isnt the norman is it!

There has to be a development and sell aspect  in  the club to progress,  the last being Hugill,  although we did not benefit. Whether a formal or flexible structure  will emerge, who knows.

Development squad worked as we had a top-tier scout in George Foster coordinating the search and a proper coach like Jimmy Bell working with the players day in, day out.

I think in this current climate of the EPPP (https://www.premierleague.com/youth/EPPP) and clubs pilfering any good youngsters before they hit puberty (think we've flogged 4 to Cat 1 academies, including a 9/10 year old to Man City), a development squad is a more prudent way of finding those low-risk, high-value players.

Its great to have local boys like Smith and Gibbo come through but those two are a rarity since 2000, and we're in a highly competitive area with the likes of Liverpool, the Manchester clubs, and, as much as I hate to admit it, Crewe within commutable distance for the area's young ballers. If a young player is good, Port Vale are bottom of the list. If they're any good AND on our books, they're poached under the EPPP terms.

If we fully committed to a Development Squad, designed to give cast-offs and non-league youngsters a couple of years under a proper coach (like Sinclair) with lots of 1 on 1 work, employing a proper class scout to find the gems, you'd only need one lad in the mould of Hugill to make the money back. Andoh would have made us a few quid if his knee hadn't fallen apart. Hugill came from Markse Town, Andoh from Cyprus I believe. 80% would be a miss but if you hit once or twice, your quids in.

Unfortunately the traditional ideas of recruiting, developing, and then flogging local lads is dead. Man City can waltz in and nab a 13 year old if they fancy, and we simply have to take that money up front as a lower-league club.

I'd personally advocate for a return of a Development Squad style (if I'm being really greedy with the utilisation of data analytics in the scouting process) as a long-term strategy to make money, but I'm just a lad on a forum and I'm sure the club know what they're doing.
